Your room seems to be in one dimension, in that everything is the same texture and finish thus you have no contrast except for the light and dark colors of black and white. If you want all black and white then maybe add some sparkle with table lamps in mercury glass and a possible brass floor lamp and brass metal end table by recliner. Larger art work to fill 2/3 of wall area behind recliner with a gold frame. Fur pillows and fluffy throws will add warmth too. You might consider larger medium toned wood end tables to add warmth too.

Or paint the room a pale pastel color like pale gold or pale lime or pale coral for an actual color warmth.

Darker curtains or print curtains.

I would change the placement of the furniture it all hugs the walls and makes it feel boxy. Take the couch out to the chair position and add a sofa table for some texture and dimension. Put chair where couch was and add a large ottoman in the center. More friendly. Also add some more color by larger and colorful pillow and throws.

We tried the sofa across from the tv as you suggested, but it doesn't work. The sofa felt awkward and too much of a barrier, as this is a small living room at the entrance of our home.

The small coffee table doesn't seem to have enough 'weight' to match the bulky furniture. An ottoman as one person suggested, or one with a glass top, metal frame, etc. and yes the room definitely needs color; any color or colors you choose for accents, whether it be a new larger painting, brighter rug, pillows, accent pieces.

It seems like the room has no focal point. Everything right now is sort of centered around the small coffee table and the TV is almost un-watchable. Some color will definitely be an easy start and artwork that is a different scale from the couch. Perhaps decide on focal point, whether it be the TV, a piece of artwork, or larger coffee table, and work from there.

How does the coffee table feel to you, is it the right size?

Looks like you have ceiling pot lights only? You definitely need to add either floor lamps or side tables large enough to hold substantial lamps. That would warm up the look and give you layered lighting. Ceiling light only will contribute to a cold look and feel.

The little stool needs a friend. Try tucking it to the right of the recliner, if you had a tray on top, at least it would hold a cup of coffee. The recliner looks too far away from the coffee table to be used easily.

Are the sheers making it feel too cool? Roman woven wood blinds would be nice if your wide window has divisions.

You have a black and white room, but you don't have the edginess of that theme. I would place your small footrest/stoop in a functional spot. A low and longer, 6 ft.) table would look good along the window wall. Consider another plant on the other side of the television to bring in more green color. Doesn't have to be the same plant. Choose one or two colors for accents, colors that you particularly like. I could see chartreuse in this space, maybe mixed with purple. Use these colors in pillows for your couch. You could then choose a piece of pottery, some art glass, a vase, something in those colors and place some decor around the room. A good way to bring color in would be in an ottoman. Very functional, you can use them as foot rests, place a tray with drinks and snacks on it, sitting space, and instead of a coffee table. This is one example of a modern style. If you have children in the house I would stay away from glass tops with squared corners. This charcoal would work, but consider something brighter.

I love your idea of adding chartreuse and purple as well as the low, long console under the window (which would probably have plants on it.) Thank you - I can visualize that working very well. The artwork above the couch is very special to me and I don't want to change it - it would actually pick up on purple. I've been on the hunt for lamps and am considering a floor lamp next to the tv. We did just buy the coffee table, so it's probably not going to be changed out... It works well for us and I do like the fact that it doesn't consume too much space/weight in the room. I plan to switch out the smaller artwork on the wall behind the leather recliner for a larger piece and to add a table on the end of the sofa and next to the recliner (wall side) with lamps. Color! Warm color. Jeez, it's dull. I don't know what that is hanging over the couch, but it looks like a piece of 'decor' from Marshalls or Home Goods or some online décor shoppe. It may not be, but that's what it looks like in the photo--like it belongs in a doctor's office. Put something real there that has some color.

Also consider replacing the window treatments. A white linen Roman shade on the window with new patterned curtains hung higher (like an inch or two below the crown molding) would look nice and make the room feel taller. This with the console someone suggested (or perhaps a long bench instead) under the window would look great.

You might consider lowering the art above the sofa a bit, and try moving the small art that's behind the recliner to the right of the tv to balance the visual weight of the plant. I like a lot of the other suggestions.

Paint the walls a dark color - dark grey or dark purple. Consider painting all 3 walls or at least one. Definitely add texture, prints and color in curtains and pillows and stool.
