1. Floor- to- ceiling wall unit instead tv stand. I used IKEA's Besta dark brown cabinets, painted wall behind dark brown. Larger TV size will help.

2. Narrow side tables behind the backs of your sectional sofa, one - below the window, another - to the right of an entrance door (could be low shelf also).

3. Floor lamps. Ottoman and pillows in matching colors .

4. How about painting the entrance door dark brown also?

I cannot thank everyone enough for the great advice!!! I'm so grateful and appreciative. There are so many of the ideas that I am in the process of trying to implement. Number one, curtains. I agree that they will add height and warmth to the room. I think hanging the tv is a great idea and will work on that. With two little boys, l love the idea of an ottoman as the coffee table. I am going to try to get at least these three things done first and then post pictures. I am trying to decide between a floor lamp and a tall plant? I think both would be too much. I will probably get both this weekend and post pics.

Drapes - tall, ceiling to floor. You need something wowzer above tv like art/wall feature. Forget hanging the tv. I'd choose a tall lamp rather than plant for this room. What about rotating the sectional 90 egress, so the backs are facing the photographer and entry-lane, and the chair can go under the window.

As owner of a custom window treatment workroom and plant lover I also vote for stationary side panels on the windows and plants. A great contemporary design would be solid panels, perhaps the color of the sofa, with a three inch contrast on the inside (leading) edge of the panels, perhaps the color of the rug. If you have a chance to go to my Houzz profile, Curtain Call Window Treatments, and click on living room designs, you'll find an example, white panels with a gray leading edge installed over screen shades, just like you have. It's a good idea to bring different fabric samples in a number of colors right into the room to see what works best.

I think groveraxle's mock ups are excellent! Please don't hang your TV. It would make it the focal point of the room. Instead I'd like to see one or two large paintings on the wall over the TV to become the focal point. Or a wall sized display cabinet/book cases to surround the TV as suggested above. I could see IKEA display cabinets working well.

FYI though, having two boys you should make sure the TV is strapped to the back of the cabinet with TV safety straps (if you haven't already done so) so it doesn't fall over onto a child by accident. It happens more often than you would realize.

Ceiling to floor drapes- thinking a muted cream with yellow highlights. Tall bookshelves with a space for the t.v. In the same location. Arrange books, art work on the bookshelves. The throw blanket should be on the couch. I like the idea of a arc light. Get rid of the tiny arrangement in the corner. Add a clear coffee table. I like the color combo.

Hi. Here are my views. First of all, you are contemporary (like me) and I feel some of these ideas aren't strictly contemporary. I like Clayton's stainless curved floor lamp. I bought one that has 5 lights and put in a corner next to my couch. I have so many compliments about that lamp. I would get the one Clayton posted and put behind couch. A tall plant on floor where you have the small vase. Mount the TV for sure!! It already is the focal and there's nothing wrong with that. Then you can put knick knacks (not a lot. maybe even a picture of your boys) on console. I like the "pop" of the blue colored wall that Jo posted. I painted 1 living room wall royal blue and the other 3 walls taupe and it looks great! I also like the wall with shelves that Jo posted. You could put 3 short shelves down one side of mounted TV and a very long shelf over the top of the TV with a couple of books, a vase, another family photo. I saw that look at a million dollar condo in Florida!!! Definitely have the furniture's front 2 feet only on the rug! Use overstock.com , wayfair.com , jossandmain.com , allmodern.com as they always have sales. Good luck!

Wonderful room and furniture to start with! I agree that curtains will pull everything together. I just had an interior designer friend of mine purchase these curtains from anthropologie and they would be stellar in your room. Tailored and the colors will make the room a design statement. Make sure that you install the curtains from the ceiling to the floor (96"). It will keep the room elegant.

I agree with other posts about changing the layout. Can you take pics of the other side of the room and the front door area?

The new tv easels really lighten up the tv issue. Restoration Hardware has several to choose from. The tv cabinet you now have seems small for the room. If you change the layout you can use it elsewhere. Add small ottomans for the boys and a wood coffee table to add warmth. Storage ottomans- one for each boy - is an excellent solution. They could "hide" their treasures. www.allmodern.com has all kinds of ottomans.

all the ideas re: curtains, etc BUT perhaps consider placing TV screen up on the wall and adding another sofa section or a couple of fluffed up chairs where cabinet is now. Makes for an inviting and cozy space to visit and/or just curl up and read.

put the tv on the wall , up about 1 1/2 ft up. stop all ealse or it will look cluttered, you dont need curtains.

I would add a third color or print...its feels flat because there is no movement. Add a love plant or two the room that has size. And I would add a valance to the windows!

One Houzz room had a double row of these kinds of shelving units (about a foot apart) from wall to wall filled with books and media items and collectibles of different kinds.

If you don't opt for shelving over the tv, consider just adding a large interesting clock. Perhaps even consider a grouping of one long and one short shelf with a clock.

Personally, I like your choice of rug with your furniture; however, I'd be inclined to move the round table to between the chair and the wall, straightening the chair more toward the windows (or put the round table beside sofa and tv) and invest in a large storage ottoman with a lid that flips to be a table when needed.

Good bones and nice colour scheme but accessories are needed. Arc chrome floor lamp or potted tree for the corner. A lamp for the side table.

I can't see a good space for artwork since the available space is above the TV. I would find image based art too noisy in that space. With young boys the TV is going to be used a lot so why put something there that will compete/distract. Personally I would prefer something sculptural like a visually interesting clock above the TV or pressed wire wall art.

Depending on scale you could add some shelving either side like suezbell suggested, or wall mount the TV and add shelves for display purposes.

Curtains are a must since your wall/window look is very monotone and blank otherwise. Creating a connection between curtain and your stronger floor colours is not a bad idea. If your artwork/knicknacks are abundant in color you can tone down the curtains.

Here's another idea -- integrate art with TV and console.

Stop listening to all of the people who want to clutter up your modern room by adding lamps, curtains, plants, etc. Maybe get rid of the rug or choose one with a bit of texture. Hang the TV on the wall, hide cords and get low white cabinet for below it (maybe Ikea if money is an issue). Like some of the modern pic if you have to have one. If you wanted boring, you wouldn't be aiming for modern. If the room needs more light install modern ceiling lighting so it won't clutter the space. Look through Chicago stores demos for ideas. Maybe a lighter color on the floor? Stay with the modern theme, don't make your room like all the traditional rooms out there. Love modern, good for you.

Looks nice! I would suggest a large sunburst for above the tv. I don't love the pillows; they look a little hard and cheap. Sorry! More mixed-matched soft textiles for the pillows in neutral beiges, whites, creams and greys. I also don't love the coffee table. It's nice but think a sleek wood one might look better. I also don't like the vase of flowers on the floor. Keep it simple and clean!

Could put the vase of flowers on the dining table. See how it looks; might be too tall. Take everything off the dining console and then find an interesting artwork for above the dining console.

I don't think you need curtains.

So many thoughts here from different posters. My two cents is this: Curtains/drapes. Height in the corner by EITHER hanging the tv, OR getting something like an armoire to hide it and whatever else you need to store. With two young children, storage is a must. I do agree that artwork over the TV will be distracting. I like your furniture and rug -you just need to keep going.

boy, you've gotten lots of advice. A great start...sofa is the right size. Finding a long narrow table to place under the window to eliminate everyone being against the walls is a good place to start. Then a lamp for reading placed on top would 'warm' up the space. I do think that excellent quality drapery panels on either side of the windows would frame up your space as well. I can almost see that there may be some light switches between window and front door. By using a substantial drapery rod that extends from the wall (or some actually hand down from the ceiling) should give your hand space to switch the lights on and off.. Other than that, the 'splashes' of color as in pillows seem a little underscored and 'safe'. Pillows are another area that needs high quality to make the room sing. btw...as your 'bend' seems mid-century, I'd look into a kidney-shaped glass coffee table to soften the edges of the space. Have fun!

The room looks good so far, just need a few things. I love the silver arc light suggestion. You also need to find something to hang on the wall above the TV. It should be bid and bold. Maybe even a large rustic wood piece to add another style into the room.

Also, the case and twigs in the corner are too small. Replace it with a larger plant/twigs in a larger or taller planter.

I would suggest to go with a touch of darker gray on one wall. Also I would suggest to place long white curtains along the wall, where the window is.This would make the room look bigger and warmer.Use a great lamp floor, and gold or silver accents.

If you like your wall colour. Add some with curtains to match your yellow tone pillows. The coffee table and side table seem too much. Try the space with one and add an ottoman or pouf. Mounting the TV gives a sense of space, more airy. A mirror or wall art. I think keeping the monotone walls allows you to change your design look, every so often. Happy decorating!!

2 Floors should be dark and solid (e.g., indoor/outdoor carpet for an illusion of ground,grass,or flowers)
3 Ceilings should appear to be weightless and distant, like the sky.

You need a BIG pop of color in the room. If it was my room, I'd do away with the television taking up prime real estate on that wall of your room, and put a HUGE modern-era painting/print on that wall----like an almost floor-to-ceiling, eye-catching piece of artwork. Pull out a color from the painting/artwork, like a bright red or orange and add that color to some patterned throw pillows on the couch. Add a black & white faux-zebra throw on one end of the couch. Also add something living---a large plant like a palm (maybe behind the chair?). A funky side table next to the end of the couch or next to the chair would add some visual interest as well. Don't be afraid to add some pops of color/pattern/texture. You have a good start, but it's too "safe" at this point.
