I think you have about a 50/50 chance of them coming back. Because they are older and the limbs are thicker, it is less likely they will be able to recover and generate new growth from a hard pruning. On the other hand, what have you got to lose? If they don't come back, just plant something else. Boxwood roots are relatively shallow (unlike hollies).
