I think espresso is going to make this underlit room feel like a cave. I'd go with a cream or taupe, chosen to work with your counter and floor, in a light shade. Here's a sense of the difference using a pretty simple lightening and darkening in Photoshop.

Maybe you should consider white on the cabinets against the wall and a contrasting espresso island. You could swap out your knobs for nickel cups/knobs to add some color and match your faucet. New back splash tile would help to update, as well. Good luck!
