Very nice. Bet it would cost a pretty penny to import them. These guys also do conversions, or build "antique" icebox refrigerators from scratch: Antique Appliances. They are a little closer to home.

I'm curious about those--would most of them have been just ice boxes originally or are they old electric fridges redone?

Other US sources are antiqueappliances.com and airconvintage.com, but theirs are mostly metal body fridges.

In any case, they certainly deserve a setting like the plan of this 1928 Frigidaire ad to show them off (pic from antiquehomestyles.com):

Out of business? Well, shucks. We may have to resume thinking about converting ice-boxes ourselves. It's really not that hard with today's self-contained compressor units. Its just cabinet restoration work, and our shop is good at that. Takes a lot of time, though, which is the reason these things usually sell at $6,000 and up.

One thing the conversions usually don't have, however, is a working freezer. Getting a refrigerator with freezer in one of those old boxes is a little more complicated.

For those who prefer to live off the grid, Mother Earth has plans for a wood burning refrigerator. Not sure how practical this is in Summer.

I would love a simple custom made fridge. Something that looks like a pantry cabinet with pull out shelves. I hate door shelves. They take up too much space. There may be a business in the custom fridge market Starcraft!

I always like separate freezers.

A wood burning refrigerator may be great in colder areas during the winter though!
