It depends on where in the state you are - things are different at the beach than they are in the mountains. It also depends on what you're trying to grow. It is very hard for me to grow organic fruits and vegetables here in Raleigh. Insects aren't as big of a problem as airborne diseases (Fire Blight, Cedar Apple Rust, etc.). Each year I try something new, this year I will attempt to encase my trees in fabric netting to block the attack. A lot of the diseases I encounter are spread by pollinating insects, which are important for fruit production so things are gonna git tricky. My other problem pest is Fire Ants. There is one organic option on the market, a bait sold as 'Come and Get It' that contains Spinosad (a natural occurring chemical). What they don't tell you is that after 2 years of use the ants will develop a resistance to it.

One option is to grow fruiting plants that don't require spraying, things like blueberries, blackberries, kiwis, persimmons, muscadines and figs. You will still have bug issues but most can be controlled with soapy water sprays or netting. Apples and peaches are next to impossible.
