As a new grafter and very rare scion you might want to give a stick to a expert and the rest you can practice with.

Thank you! I can get more from one of the trees anytime I like. But the tree has
some issues that might be fireblight :( The tree is between 16 and 20
years old and I don't know what it was grafted on.) I don't know any experts but I can ask at my garden club (we were
suppost to have a field trip to see a grafter but then there was a
scheduling problem and it never happened.) I am told this tree has tons of
apples every year despite the deer and the possible fireblight, and the
fact that it probably has never been pruned (except by deer). I have about 25 pieces that are between 8 and 18" and I can go get more if I want. They are very slim though. I have them wrapped in some press and seal wrap with a damp paper towel sitting on the top shelf of my fridge.

Your method looks great. I will definitely try it, it seems much simpler then some that I have seen. Thanks!
