Well I think the white one is going to stand out from the rest quite a bit. I'd suggest using a black and white photo there and putting it in some way which really highlights it. Or maybe trade that one out for a more muted color, or perhaps paint it darker? Anyway, my point is that things need to be either fairly similar in the sequence or have a quite distinctive focus, otherwise it risks just looking busy.
To play devil's advocate, I also like a really chock-full full plastered with photos look. So you could add more frames and a very busy style could work. But only if it can become more like a carpet square pattern of photos, where they all blend into a large overall pattern.

The frames and photos may be too small for the wall.

I would place the largest frame in the center of the stairwell and then work around it with different shapes and sizes. I agree with a lot more of them to fully go up the wall. Adding more white or cream frames will balance the look and also add some that have some reflective looks like mirror or glass frames. Love that look and it is a great way to display your family photos!

How much of the wall space do you suggest that I cover? I was thinking maybe just the length of the handrail.

Yes definitely, and I would go as high as you can. I did this when my kids were little and had pictures of them thru the years it is fun and nostalgic.

In order to avoid hammering tons of holes in your wall, try tracing the frames onto butcher paper, cutting out the patterns and arranging them on the wall in different orientations. This way you can experiment with paper/tape rather than frames/nails. The frames always look different on the wall than compared to laid out on the floor, especially if you're dealing with a diagonal space like a stairway. Good luck -hope this helps!

Hi again! I would suggest maybe moving the whole series down towards the lower floor by another foot and a half or so. It looks like someone going to reach the upper light switch might grab the photo in the dark. But it is possible that it's just the angle from which you took the photo.

Great layout and placement! Good job on keeping the frames within the banister perimeter --you don't want the frames hanging off into space.

Another helpful hint: if you mark your patterns with the bracket/wall hanger placement you can make your nail holes before removing the patterns to make sure you get the exact layout you see.

You're off to a good start! Rather than having your frames in a more-horizontal format, try moving down the stairs. This picture is a good example. Notice how the homeowner starts at the top with the frames and descends the staircase. One thing I appreciate about the example photo is the balance of the frames - that may be something you strive for, too. Best of luck!

I do think you need more frames so you can fill the space up better. Here's a few ideas photos. I know they may not be your style, but they may give you a bit of an idea.
