Am I reading that right - This hail cloth is 26.2 feet wide, and each one-foot-length is only $3? So I could buy a piece that is....26.2 feet by 26 feet, and it would be $78?

If I'm understanding that correctly, for about $150 bucks I could protect both of my main vegetable garden areas from hail, once I figured out how to best suspend it over the gardens. I wonder if it's durable enough that carbineer clips at each corner could then be cabled with something like clothes-line to connect to my roof and garage, effectively creating a not-too-taught angled tarp about 10-12 feet over my garden, which sits between my house and garage.

Would the 13-15% shade it creates be enough to cause reduced production of fruits like peppers or tomatoes? It could probably be removed by late June...

Since your peppers shouldn't be in the ground until June anyway (right?!) I don't see how 15% shade would set them back too far.

Well, yes and no, depending on the weather. I try to have them out before Memorial day if the weather cooperates. Either way, it's about 30-45 days of partial shade.

mathewgg, I believe you are reading the price correctly.

As far as hail being done by the end of June that is optimistic. Seems to me that while May and June have it's share of hail it's often July that has the most damaging hail. This page has a list of the worst storms by insurance http://www.rmiia.org/catastrophes_and_statistics/Hail.asp Certainly there can be hail in August and September as well. Here in Aurora we usually get hail about 6 times per warm season. Luckily it seems only about every 3rd year where it's really heart breaking damaging.

~14% shade shouldn't make too much difference as Colorado has some intense sunshine most days. I think the limiting factors on growing vegetables here are early/late freezes, inconsistent rainfall, thin top soils and HAIL.
