Decorating With a Brown Couch

I purchased the Fresno brown 'espresso' couch from Raymour and Flannagan. In florescent light in the store, it has a green undertone, but under regular lighting it is brown. It comes with two matching solid brown pillows, but I want to add some color with pillow(s). The couch is going in the basement that we are re-doing. the floor is a tile floor in grey and tans that resemble stone. Ideas PLEASE!

What are the colors of the adjoining rooms? Do you have a rug?

I suggest finding rug or art for the room and pulling your pillow colors from that.

louislinus-I am not worried about adjoining rooms-it is a laundry room:) that ia closed off with a door.

crl_ That is what everyone is saying online, but I am worried about bring out the green undertone-I want to make sure that doesn't come through.

I would pick a color that works with the green undertones. Why dont you want the green to come through, isnt that why you picked it in the first place?

No, I needed a dark sleeper sofa for the room, and did not have the time to do the required shopping. I picked brown, but when the salesperson moved the cushion under florescent light, I could see the orange. The actual color name is expresso.

Does your room that it's going into have florescent lighting? Is the color that you don't want to be brought out green or orange? You mention orange in your last post above.

If your room does have florescent lighting, can that be changed? Lighting makes a big difference in how colors appear.

the room does not have florescent lighting. I want to make sure I do not bring out the green undertone. I was wondering if accenting with orange would bring out the green-if so, waht other color could I use as an accent?

Why not buy an orange throw pillow, or even a piece of orange fabric and see if it brings out the green undertones ? My couch has the same shade of microfiber upholstery and it never had a green undertone -in the store or at home.As Errant_gw said, you can use almost any color you want with that shade of brown - blue, green, yellow, pink, purple.

thank you-woodrose-excellent idea! That is why I signed up for Houzz-two/ten heads are better than one:) The manufacturer of the sofa actually makes an espresso brown and a chocolate brown, but the chocolate there is a order time of 7-10 weeks.

Hi Aking- I too tound the lighting in furniture stores horrendous. I was just going to add that when you are draping your sample colors to see what goes, that it might be that one orange doesn't work but another shade will. (or light blue or yellow or green etc).

aking...we have a chocolate brown leather sofa & my pillows are in the aqua and lime green family. I've also got an oatmeal color. I switch pillows around, so I've also used a lavender/purple print on it. Have a Lee Industries chair that has aqua & lime green & brownish/grey on an off white background so made pillows to tie the sofa in with that chair. It's actually quite versatile....even pink would look good on it!!
