Did I overdo it?

I went to a huge lamp and home accessories warehouse sale this past weekend with the idea of giving some of my old lamps new life. Started with DR; new shades for buffet lamps.

before: (old pic with old rug)

after:

The black shades on the buffet lamps are BIG in real life. They have a large diameter which you don't really see in the photo. But I am getting used to them.

I lived with these for a day and decided to go back for more....and added two more black shades to my Chinese Lady lamps in the hallway and LR.

My home is a center hall georgian, and now it occurs to me that when entering, you can see four lamps with black shades. If you turn to the left, you see this

and to the right, you see this:

My question is, can one have too many black shades? They do look pretty dramatic, especially at night.

Did I overdo this look?

LOVE the two on the buffet (and the new rug!) and the one on the foyer table, but I'd change the one in the LR.

    I agree 100% with tibbrix's comments.

OK, I thought about that too. But the two in the entry and LR are a matching pair. Does it make sense to have two identical lamps with different shades?

    Sure. Not an issue.

I agree -- the one in the LR needs to be changed. And yes, if they're in separate rooms, you can have different shades. In case you ever want to put them together you might keep the black matching shade.

    What an improvement!

I looked at the "before" and though oh, that's nice, and checked to be sure it was the before, not the after. Then I scrolled down...and my eyes opened wide! Those are nice shades! Shades aren't inexpensive, but money very well spent!

Definitely like the black shades on the buffet lamps. I agree that you should keep looking for a shade for the living room lamp. Nice rooms!!!

thanks everyone....the shades were reasonable so I can afford to replace one. I had a feeling I was overdoing it even when I bought them, but it seemed logical to get the same shades since the lamps are identical.

As always, GW helps me figure out what I need to do!

I agree with everyone; the change in the DR with the shades and new rug is quite dramatic; everything suddenly came together. I too love your art and your rooms.

The dining room went to STUNNING.

The dining room shades look spectacular!! The difference is amazing. Don't care for the other shades as much--I think it's the shape. BTW, what is your dining room paint color? Love it!

echoing ratherbesewing...fantastic wall color! What is it?

Hi all, I'm busy tweaking shades as I write this....the DR color is Quincy Tan from the BM Historical collection. Been around forever and I always go back to it; it never fails.

Ah, no wonder! Love tans. It's really beautiful.

Agree with tibbrix on lamp shades. Lovely home!

In buying new lamps/shades, there's a "go big" influence right now. I have oversized shades/fixtures in my master bedroom and bath. Dramatic, but I understand why this is a decor thing right now. It's so much fun!

Yes, it does seem like lamps have gotten a bit top heavy lately; might as well jump on the bandwagon and roll with it. My DR shades still seem a little big IRL; as you can get a little better in this photo:

They're kind of "in your face" when you walk into the room. But I'm going to stick with them and think they'll look more normal the more I live with them.

I've tweaked a bit, and wondering if it may be time for one of my Chinese Ladies to find another home in my MBR. I don't know if the lamp I've replaced her with is exactly right but could be a good placeholder until I find something:

Whoops! tried using the panoramic setting on my iPhone...oh well, hope you can get the idea. Here's another look with a different lamp behind the couch

In the LR, I'm thinking I may need a lamp with a little more heft there that would complement the painting. Not a "statement" piece. WDYT? BTW, the floor lamp next to the drop front desk is about to be replaced by a smaller, swing arm version that I also bought at the sale. It's getting a small repair at the moment.

Or am I just overthinking this? One thing always seems to lead to another!

It's just perfect now! Love it.

Did you find that the black shades reduced the light output?

Yes, they definitely do. But the black shades lined with gold reflect light, too. You really see that at night, where they give off a beautiful glow. I would only use them where you want ambient lighting; no good at all for reading, or even seeing things like a collection, etc.

I love your dining room. Such a difference. Not sure you need a lamp with more heft since you have the sconces there. I think the one you have in the last photo works pretty well. Unless you have a few more experiments to try.

Hi outside playing; I don't have sconces in the LR, and that's where I was thinking the lamp behind the sofa could use a little more heft. I'm thinking it should be something neutral but with some presence. The painting is large and very vertical; and the lamp and orchid are too. I have been thinking maybe something with an hourglass or pear shape could be what I need.

I love the second lamp in your living room, it suits the surroundings. That being said, keep the one in the hall with the black lampshade. It looks "just right".

I have a white ceiling lamp whose shade is lined with gold; absolutely beautiful golden light. So maybe black with gold lining is the way to go if I need ambient light somewhere.

Both rooms look amazing...I didn't see anything I didn't like..I'm just not 100% on the centerpiece on the table. I love the color your art pieces bring into your rooms.

beautiful! Have always loved your art, even when I can't remember who it is on GW that had those paintings.

I can't believe I'm the only one who prefers the more traditional shades in your original buffet picture, but I do. You have beautiful artwork, and to me the oversized black shades seem to say "look at me" and compete with the painting. They also just look better (IMO) with your traditional furniture and the other whites in the room, but obviously I'm in the minority on that one, and if you love them and they make you happy that's more important. I think the black shades work better on the L.R. and hallway lamps. Either way, your home is gorgeous. I especially love that floor lamp to the left of your secretary!

I LOVE your dining room with the black shades. It looks like it belongs in a magazine!

I like the new lamp better in the living room.

I absolutely love your artwork! Superb!

The shape of the shade on the entry lamp seems to be tapered and the ones in the dining room are round. I think the tapered ones would look better on the buffet lamps.

Thanks all, still playing here, and I have a new question: IF I were to get a new lamp for the LR, what shape, size, style??? The crystal one I put in there yesterday looks good but has always been in the Master BR, and DH wants to keep it there. The warehouse sale continues this weekend and there are literally hundreds of lamps left to choose from, now discounted even more. I could go back and look again. SO, if I had my druthers, what would be ideal? short? fat? tall? curvy? color? The lamp would sit close to the painting and I want something that will have some presence but let the art be the main focal point.

PS: Please ignore the blue pillow on the couch....it's back in the guest room where it belongs, LOL!

I'd get a large bulbous body lamp for behind the sofa rather than a tall pillar type, if you're going to have only one lamp back there. Two tall on each end would work, but I think one doesn't.

    those are beautiful, tib!

Just examples (those are from Pottery Barn, btw) of what I think would look nice behind your sofa, a lamp with more heft to the base.

I think you are on to something, tib. Thanks. I don't know if I am going to go back to the sale or not but if I do I will look for something round or pear shaped; with some weight at the bottom. I've already got enough vertical lines going on in that room. I also think something shiny is the way to go; you can never have enough light reflection in there.

I've always loved your house, jjam! Classic & timeless. DR is perfection.

Did you go back to the sale?

Looks fabulous! I think the black shades in the DR add such a level of elegance and sophistication.

Thanks all, still adjusting to the changes but your feedback has been most helpful. Peep, I DID go back to the sale, and of course I was a bad girl......all prices were cut another 30% and I came home with three more lamps; one for the LR and the other two are a pair that I may give to my daughter. I'll post a photo or two tomorrow when I have the house to myself and I can play a bit :)

    Love ALL your new lamps!!

Your rooms look great! I also love the black shades in the DR and they don't look too big IMO. Your other lamps are pretty cool, too, and they definitely look better with the lighter shades.

I have lamps that were a pair and are in two separate bedrooms. One has a black shade and the other ivory.

Jjam, not IMO, but am *I*? The black is my fall/winter look. I change out lampshades/accessories to ivory/white for spring/summer.

Greatroom. All black goes except for the pictures. They're acrylics a friend did. Urns on FP get changed out to white.

DR. Buffet runner/lampshade go. Foxie stays! lol

Foyer. Only the lampshades go. Rug is not white design, but cream.

Using black adds drama, so guess I must be a drama queen. ;)

thanks again everyone for your comments. I'm beginning to think I've made a mess of things and should have left well enough alone....but on we go, I've got too much invested now to turn back!

Patty, thanks so much for your wonderful photos. I may do as you suggested and swap out the black shades for lighter ones in the summer. Storing those drum shades is a pain though; they don't stack on top of each other. But it may be worth it. BTW, your home is to die for!

I did go back to the sale and did some more damage; got this lamp that I actually assembled there.

Here is how it looks in the room; in place of the Chinese Lady:

Once I get the lamps placed correctly I will tweak some more accessories; don't like the pillows and not sure the orchid is right.

Does this look better? If the new lamp isn't right there it will work somewhere so I'm not too worried if this isn't its permanent home.

As always, fresh eyes and honesty are worth so much, TIA!

Did you get the Costco orchid? I didn't know it wasn't real until the check out lady told me so! Ha

Ok........ Lamps are hard. I don't dislike that one. But it's not wowing me in your beautiful room. Can you try the creamier shade from your statue lamp? Maybe the black shade?

I really like the antique brass one that Tibbrix posted-- your frame & color of drapes. The artwork is to die for!

Patty, your home is so lovely!

hi pepp, and thank you for your thoughts. Yes, I got two costco orchids, LOL! I've killed so many live ones I decided it was time to raise the white flag and go faux!.

I see what you are saying about the LR lamp, especially when I look at the photos. I will try different shades and see how I like it. I was a little hesitant to get another metallic finish since I'm going to be bringing in another brass floor lamp into the mix, and with the brass tables and mirror, thought it might be too much. But it probably would have looked good! I would say that In the photos the new lamp looks kind of flat but IRL it looks a little livelier, and the color works well with the rug.

The sale is over and will be back next year; probably a good thing! I'll have a whole year to get ready......but for now will enjoy this year's haul :)

I like the new green lamp. I think some elements in a room need to be bit-players, rather than focal points. It picks up the tones in the painting and rug, without screaming "look at me!". And gives off light, which is the point, really. LOL

The one thing I would offer is changing the round shades on your figurine lamps with a rectangular or more Asian style - right now w/the black shades all I can think of is somebody drunk with a lampshade on their head. ;-)

Personally, I like the white lamps better. The room is a little dark on its own, and they add brightness.
