I wouldn't tile above the cabinets, but maybe add crown moulding on the cab tops. If the tile stopped at the moulding top that would look "normal". Grey grout would pick up your cabinet color...nice!

I'd tile up to the hood or the top of the cabinets. You must be excited to be at this point. Did you realize the chimney on your hood would be that tall? Just my opinion, but if it were covered in white from the top of the cabinets up, the entire space would look more balanced.

Thanks! I forgot to mention that yes, we will be adding moulding to the cabinets.

We have 10-foot ceilings so that is why the chimney hood is so tall. I agree that it really looks tall now that is done, which is why I though putting tile on the sides of the chimney might add to it and make it more of a feature wall.

I think tiling to the top of the cabinets would look best. We tiled to the ceiling around our similar hood but our cabinets go to the ceiling, 8' ceilings.

I don't agree with painting the top of the chimney white I think that would look very strange. Chimneys are supposed to go all the way to the ceiling! Having the tile level with cabinet tops will create a "roofline" there.

I'd tile to the top of the cabinets. It'll look great.

Also, to clarify--someone had suggested I not only tile to the ceiling, but also the area above the cabinets to the left and the right of the hood....wondering if anyone had thoughts on that, or if a "strip" to the ceiling would look better.

I would add the molding and then if you wanted to, tile to the top of the cabinets including their molding. Personally I don't like an entire wall of tile and I would only tile up to the hood and then top the tile with a decorative band of different end tile.
