you do not need lights over the island. but you do in the kitchen it self.

now if I follow you, there is wire you can use for lighting, that is sourced in the cabinet above the island?? how would you switch this? .

I would remove that cabinet, and use the power source to run rail, or track lighting.

the island is not large enough or have enough ceiling height to really use a light over it.

now, I see the fan is swagged by electrical cord for power, that lends itself to MCM but the new counters and kitchen doesn't look very MCM. so I am a bit confused. but you can defiantly swag a pendant over the table.

These pictures might show you better that the house is Mid Century Modern. The kitchen has granite counters that I put in when I bought the house. I did not know what MCM was when I first bought the home and put the granite table in where there used to be a wall, I am now trying to just update the lighting that will go with the style of the dining room and family room which are all in the same room.

This wall separated the dining room and the kitchen. The stove used to be on the other side. This is where the granite table is now.

I still have the ceiling fan hanging from when I bought the home. It has the chain and plugs into the wall so I have been trying to figure out what can be put in its place since the ceilings do not have wiring like newer homes. I am not sure how much room is between the roof and ceiling.

This is the original picture of the living room and the dining room is part of this room. I need lighting in this room also to coordinate with the dining room.

the power you have in the kitchen can it be reworked to have a switch?

before anything we need to resolve the kitchen lighting. you need light in there. the dining room and living room can follow that.

I am thinking about painting the cabinets. I want more light in the kitchen but I do not want to cut into the wood on the ceiling. I am hoping if I put in some lights under the cabinets it will help.

so the powe in the old hood cannot be used for lighting ?

If power to the old hood is available, and can have wiring moved to a new fixture box, there are newer wireless solutions to operate the switch. May need electrician. Be careful, though as opening any wall in a room, usually means whole room will need to be upgraded to current electrical code. Check your local requirements.
