I wouldn't do gray grout with white subway unless you like that kind of grid look.

What color is the counter? A light grey grout will be good. I could see a running bond horizontal pattern everywhere except above the stove. Where you could do a chevron placement trimmed with a small pencil trim.

I agree, I would keep it simple as well. I think the light grey grout would offer just enough contrast without making it too busy./grid like.

I don't think an insert of more subway would detract, but you might consider a herringbone with white grout if you like a bit of pattern and interest.

I love a pattern behind stove, I just don't think you have enough space.

Light grey grout would be very nice! You can lighten it by mixing it with white if you prefer, I did that once and it turned to a lovely silver. As for the area above the range, consider adding a small shelf; you can screw it into the cabinets. I also did that once and covered it with decorative, dark grey metallic tiles. Used it for small bottles of oil, salts, etc. Very attractive and useful

A bit of an issue here is that your range hood is the same width as your range. Mitnwouldmhave been better if it was six inches wider

I am also not a fan of grid lines. I prefer white grout. I would keep the backsplash consistent over the stove.

IMO the contrast tile design behind a range is a very dated look

Nice! Now put a shelf above the range; half the width of the cabinets, covered in dark tiles that compliment your counters. Place decorative and useful items on it. You'll love it and it will break up all the whiteness of the backsplash. :)

Putting a shelf above the range is ok if you don't cook. But IMHO, it will create a mess when you cook.

not true about a shelf above the range. Not true at all. I've had one for years. Make it half the depth of the cabinets and use your vent when you cook.
