Kitchen layout

Wondering if I could get input on kitchen layout. Wife and I felt two island layout would work the best for us. However after careful review, wondering if prep island would appear too narrow at 2 ft and therefore cheap appearing. I don't believe we have much room to play with the width otherwise may affect the walking space between the islands and our dining area. I believe those are set at 42".

Would appreciate any input or new recommdations on kitchen layout.

taking dirty pots/pans from the cooktop and having to zig around that prep island would drive me batty.

Cheap didn't come to mind at all. What did was that skirting around that middle island to get to the cleanup area would get old quickly. I would rather cook in mama g's last plan.

Mama g's plan. And, maybe curve the snack bar side of the island so you don't have the birds-on-a-wire diner setup.

What's a data hub? Is it something you want in the middle of the kitchen?

Thanks for all input. Thanks mamagoose for the modifications you made. Yes I was also thinking about changing the two island setup into one large island. Only hesitation I would have is that I wasn't sure how it would appear having a sink facing directly into a wall without much of a view. The kitchen and dining area would overlook a lake.

Let me post how our dining area would relate to the kitchen to see if that would change any recommendations.

Are you still in the design phase? I think you could have issues with the door in the dining area crowding anyone seated at the table. It would be better if you could do a rectangular bumpout along the 19 foot measurement and make it not as deep as the bumpout is now. Then one large island would not look lost.

You will spend more time with prepping and cooking than cleaning, and more time with people in the kitchen during those activities, too. and (if your family is anything like mine) they will all skedaddle during cleanup lol! So I'd rather have the view while prepping, and curve the island so your companions can also see the view.

How is the dining table going to be oriented? I'm not sure how you will use that space especially with the exterior door there. I prefer the one large island which also leaves more room behind it.

Karenseb that was noticed and door will be decreased to standard 30" so should have plenty of clearance

What about moving the exterior door to the left of the dining area windows (e.g. just above where the plan reads "engineered flush micro lam beam")? If the table is going to be centered in the bump out that will give you plenty of room.

Also I do like both of mama goose's revisions (single large island or clean up in inner island and snacks on outer island and cleanup on perimiter). Also I like moving the ovens to the side as well.

Quite a void in the kitchen center. Have u considered reorienting the island and putting a circular seating at the end?

I agree with Stan's idea to move the door, karenseb's idea to change the bump-out to a more functional, rectangular shape, and nightowl's idea to take MamaG's single island plan but make the seating area a half-circle so that people can actually visit while sitting there instead of eating like diners (who are usually eating solo).

I think the UC beverage fridge should move to the other side of the island so it's next to the regular fridge. This keeps those seeking a drink out of the work zones.

Buehl, one of the best kitchen design gurus here at GW, often says "it is easy to make a functional kitchen beautiful, but very difficult to make a beautiful yet dysfunctional kitchen functional" (paraphrased). Please don't get hung up on things like a clean-up sink looking weird if it's facing a wall without a view window. That doesn't matter. It will look fine. There are many things that can be done to make that sink wall look charming. First, focus on function. Then focus on aesthetics.

    Love your pantry and mudroom.

If your goal is to achieve looking at your lake view while at the clean up sink (without the barrier) why not swap the islands..but eliminate the seating at the clean up island.

keep the seated island in the outer island. Call it your "snack island". Make it bigger (than the 9x2). More table-like. Use it for buffets. A wood top. You've certainly got the room out there. Even put a sink there if you choose. Use it as as focal point.
