Help with Bathroom Remodel

Apparently, it may not be such a good thing to watch hours of HGTV because I now have completely unrealistic ideas about how this is supposed to work (particularly on a non-billionaire budget). Where is my 3D, James Cameron worthy computer animated sketch of the bathroom?!

But since I live in the real world, I am trying to get some ideas as I get this project started. My bathroom is small and I am adding a separate shower, radiant floors and new fixtures. While I don't want a really bold design, but I feel like everything I come up with myself is beige and boring. Any suggestions for a happy medium color scheme? Any opinions about what type of tile? My house was built in the '20s.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm about to take on my bathroom this weekend so I feel your pain. I'm choosing either a wainscot or white tile walls 4 ft up from the floor with a happy color on top or a wall paper, this way it won't overwhelm and will look (hopefully) classic. A friend just did his shower floor natural stone (available at Home Depot) which feels good underfoot and looks organic and beautiful, with dark brown accents it would be lovely. Good luck and post after pics.

Neutrals don't need to be boring ! play with colors, textures, and patterns.

I agree. I just did mine a couple months ago. Went with the classic floor and wall....hoping it would be another 100 yrs before those things are done again. I wanted people to walk into the room and not know it was recently remodeled..but to think that is was just incredibly well kept from its original state.

Thanks for the great ideas. I think I am going to stay with neutral stone and either choose a bolder paint color border or just spice it up with towels and mats. I'll be sure to post after pics!

About half way through the remodel and I am really over it! Contractors are fine, but I am so tired of making decisions (there are way too many tiles to choose from, paint colors etc.). I know this is just mid-reno remorse and I will enjoy it when its done. I think we are about 60% finished. Here is the latest in progress pictures.

ismoon, I completely agree with you about the decisions. It can be overwhelming and exhausting at times. You're doing a bathroom remodel. I'm doing the entire home! Are you remodeling the rest of your home after this ? Our demotion started in mid-November 2012. I think we're about... 80% done, maybe ? Not sure yet. Good luck. Please post photos as you progress! :)

Imagine redoing all floors, paint all walls, and master bath. So, think of it this way, it could be worse. ;)

You are doing great and I think you won't regret your classic and lovely tile choices. I know about all those other little details too, but continue to look at rooms on Houzz with similar tiles and you can get ideas that way. Makes it easier to choose. It's overwhelming what is out there! And one piece of bold advice if you like - paint the walls black! Honestly, it is bold without being bold as it's not really a colour so you can still inject your favourite colour towels of the season and it will look awesome.
Will look forward to seeing the final look.

Thanks for all of the encouragement! The contractor says that we will be done next week! Of course, now I want to redo the guest bathroom, the wetbar, the dining room, and did I mention that I hate my kitchen cabinets?! This is my first real house (I have only lived in apartments/townhouses before this) so I know I am probably going overboard a bit. So far (four months since I moved in), I have installed an irrigation system, converted a sitting room into my budget version of a Sex and the City closet, refinished all of the hardwood floors and rediscovered how much I hate to paint. If I had an unlimited budget, I would never be done!

May I ask the name of the tile you chose?
