Do you know if your plant is Asian wisteria (Chinese wisteria/W. sinensis or Japanese wisteria/W. floribunda) or one of the American wisterias (W. frutescens or W. machrostachya)? How well it overwinters in your container may depend on the variety. The container alone isn't large enough to contain the roots, so expect it to extend into the soil below and grow out from the container underground.

Regardless of the type, are you aware of how large and heavy the vine can get? Whatever it is growing on needs to be quite solid so that the vine doesn't pull it down or you will need to be quite diligent in pruning. Also, it can spread via runners and seed, so where you plant it should be somewhere you can mow around to keep it under control. The American types are somewhat less aggressive in their spreading than the Asian types, but still can be extemely vigorous growers.

Can you return the plant since it is a recent purchase and it seems like it isn't totally suited to this spot? Or alternatively, can you build a large, but low raised bed to improve its drainage? Then the plant can reach down into the soil, but it won't be totally in your native soil. Just be sure you will be ready to do the pruning and removal of suckers to keep this somewhat under control.
