I don't know where you can find rhubarb in your town but suggest the farmers' market. Ask around there because the vendors who have it, may not bring it every marketday.

I compare my rhubarb with the neighbors'. (Don't we all do things like that ...?)

Anyway, I think it does better with afternoon shade.

Hmmm. That spot has afternoon shade. I'm tempted to buy 3 or more online and plant them throughout my yard but then I remember that the ones on the farm kept coming back even after Roundup etc.

We went to O'Toole's in Lakewood this weekend and saw a bin with rhubarb crowns for sale. They're red and look decent. Didn't check the price. Call to see if they still have it, price, etc. Good luck!

O'Tooles (I go to the one in Littleton, Federal/Bowles) has rhubarb roots/crowns and potted plants every spring. From what I remember, they aren't cheap though.

Never really tried to grow it though. If I had more room I would, I love strawberry rhubarb pie!

I definitely second the recommendation to plant it in afternoon shade. When I put mine in years ago I put it in the sunniest place I had, thinking they needed full sun--growing up in Illinois ours was always in full sun, but out here with our high-altitude sun mine wilts every day, no matter how much water I give it, and I've finally conceded the battle and am planning to move it to a shadier place.

Any "real" garden center should carry them, and you can also possibly find the roots packed in peat moss in plastic bags at the big box stores soon, but the big box stuff is very poorly taken care of so it's probably worth a little more money to get them at a "real store!" Valentine is a good red variety, but I wound up with a clump of a couple different varieties, so some of it's greener and I usually add a drop of red food coloring when I make rhubarb sauce to give it a Pink Boost.

Enjoy your rhubarb! I don't think you'll have any trouble finding it locally.

I grew my rhubarb from seed. This will be it's third season! It's in full sun, and I can definitely see that it's under duress in the hot afternoon of summer days. It's grown rather large, and maybe I should consider moving it while it's early...
