Eastern Redbud Burgundy Hearts

I posted on the tree forum for help selecting a tree for my backyard, and they mentioned it might be worth checking here. It will be my daughter's tree, and several years back, our landscape designer recommended a Redbud 'Burgundy Hearts' for the space. There may be a place that I can find one locally, but I'm also looking for alternatives. My wish is for a pretty tree (preferably pink blossoms) that will do well in Zone 6b. It will be tucked in front of a line of arbs, and I can see it from my kitchen window. Does anyone have a good suggestion of a tree that will do well on the coast north of Boston?

No problem. I just wanted to give folks a "heads up".

The cherries will likely be more fussy and delicate then the crab apples, plums or redbuds

Anyone try to grow any of these things? Can anyone say from experience any of these do or don't like the Massachusetts climate? Know a local nursery that carries this variety of redbud?

The original purpose of this post was people on the tree forum (like me) advised the OP to check to see if the redbud cultivar does well in Massachusetts. (Because a few popular cultivars are less hardy then the species and don't).

What size do you need? (height and width). There are many spring flowering trees with pink blossoms, such as flowering cherries, dogwoods, crab apples, magnolias and more. Is the site in full sun, part sun, etc.?

Hi Bill - my designer has the diameter of the tree at 8-10 ft in the plan. I'm sure it will get bigger than this over time, but that's the space that we have for it. Something more compact may be a good choice. It's pretty much full sun after mid-morning. I'd love for it to be a really pretty flowering tree, but do not want a huge mess on the ground! Is that possible?

bill_ri_z6b(Zone 6B). This discussion was started in the Tree Forum. She was advised to go to this forum to ask for local opinions as to whether her choices do well in this area.

She wants a small tree with pink flowers AND purple leaves. I tossed out Prairifire Flowering Crabapple and Royal Burgundy Flowering Cherry as options. parker25mv suggested Kwanzan flowering cherry and Scarlet Brandywine crabapple. Royal raindrop might also be an option.

edlincoln, I never saw her original post in the tree forum, so all I saw was her post here, where she wants a pretty tree, preferably with pink blossoms.

If purple foliage is a must, then flowering plum might be an option. But if, as she asks here, just a pretty tree, and even pink flowers aren't absolutely needed, then Laburnum might work. Very showy when in bloom, and would not overpower the space.

Thank you both for the input, and sorry for the confusion between the two forums! I really like the Royal Burgundy, Kwanzan and the Royal Raindrop. I'll look into those.

We actually have a flowering plum in front of our house...we planted it for our son when he was born. And this new tree is for our daughter (though we're a little late this time, she'll be 2 soon). Funny that you mention laburnum! We have one in the corner of the yard :) It's the 6.5ft circle in the bottom left, with a Japanese maple and some yellow/green shrub underneath.
