Does anyone remember the List of Favorite Nurseries we compiled?

I am organizing my computer files and came across that list. Surprised it was done in 2009!! Many people contributed and we ended up with 18 pages. I am trying to post the list here so everyone can get a look at it and maybe we could update it? I know there have been so many changes.

I'm posting just the first 4 pages, to see if there is any interest. I can post the whole thing if there is. I had it in a PDF file and had to convert it to jpeg to post here. If anyone has another way of sharing it, I'd like to know.

I wonder how many are still in operation. I know Quackin Grass is closed.

I used to use this extensively. In former days I took plant buying trips to various New England states over the course of the summer. I have a printed copy that I kept. I am now older with a number of perennial garden beds that I struggle to maintain, So, I take fewer trips . The sad truth also is that many of the destination nurseries with the unusual plants are no longer there.

Variegated Foliage in CT is gone. Blanchette Gardens, Seawright Gardens, Stonegate Gardens in MA are gone. I think Perennials from Susan is gone, I know that the Mixed Border and Uncanoonuc Mountain in NH are gone. Cady Falls in VT is gone.

These days, I do an online search for nurseries and garden centers in places I am going to. I check out the websites and make a judgment about how interesting they are likely to be.

Asarum - Thanks so much for updating this information. I rarely get an opportunity to go to nurseries and when I do, I stick to the same three in my area. It's too bad so many of these nurseries are closed. I did go to a Daylily specialty nursery in MA years ago and I don't remember the name, but I know they are no longer there. I did go to Perennials from Susan once and they had a nice collection. I got a very unusual Japanese Jack in the Pulpit that was gorgeous, but it disappeared on me. I will post the rest of the list here this week.

I wonder why there were so many and not a lot of new nurseries starting up now? It seems as though a lot of these nurseries were the product of a passionate individual gardener. But I wonder what changed that individuals are no longer doing that? But now that I say that it occurs to me that there are a lot of individuals on Etsy selling plants. I wonder if that's what changed? Maybe it's too expensive to have the infratstructure of a brick and mortar facility? I'll have to check out the garden related places on Etsy, and see how extensive they are.

That's a good idea to look up nurseries and garden centers in areas you are visiting. I never think to do that. I also struggle to maintain our garden as well. The older you get the harder it is.
