dining room empty

We just moved into a very grand home.. We brought some furniture that we thought would fit together. What colour can we incorporate for accents and what are we missing in this room?? Is really is not coming together! Help!

Furniture does not have to match but yours does not go well together. Everything is one height. The curtains are not full enough. I would start with a pretty oriental rug, and then base your furnishings around it.

I do not think that your chairs fit your table. I like the chairs but the table does not look very "grand". Remove the placemats and all accessories in the room.

I am sure that you will get some good advice from others!

I have to agree with prior poster. At least get taller host/hostess chairs, a rug and some appropriate artwork. I'd consider painting the sideboard.

Beautiful room. The furniture seems a little to casual for the ceiling. If that makes sense.

Eeekk .. We spent a lot of those chairs! Are u suggesting to remove these? Any way we can work around it.. The curtains? Maybe they need to go? I can't remove furniture... Too expensive!

I don't think you need both the console table and the sideboard. Browse through dining room photos on Houzz: [House dining room photos[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/dining-room-ideas-phbr0-bp~t_722)

Put the large world wall art above the larger console. I would remove the smaller console unless there's a practical need for two. I would replace the curtains with ones that contain the chair upholstery and wall color. The ones pictured are from Target:

The current table lamp is too small. I would either replace it with a pair of taller lamps or remove it entirely.

No, I would keep the chairs! They are very nice. I just think that they do not go with the current table. I would check Craigslist....often times you see very nice hutches, tables, sideboards, etc. Is your furniture new?

I also suggest that you put the long art over the buffet. and take out the console. Get an area rug and add more panels to window. Put a couple of buffet lamps on the buffet. Take off the placemats and put on a nice centerpiece.. Pick an accent color.

Yup it's all from restoration hardware... Spent a lot of them! Sales associate told us that the furniture would go well together as we didn't want that matching look. We are just super stuck! I was trying to find placements that fit the same colour as the curtains? But I feel like the curtains need to go. What colour should I incorporated?

Keep the chairs but find a larger, more elegant table for them at an estate sale, Craislist, or a high-end antique shop. (Could your kitchen accommodate the table?) You need very elegant curtains at the window, tall buffet lamps on your console on the right and maybe a large painting on the left instead of the too-small table and the map art. Look for a beautiful rug that will fill the room. Again, you might find one at an estate sale or local high-end antique dealer.

For now I would keep the panels pulled open to the ends and add several panels of sheers in between. I would do as Susan suggested. You can find Inexpensive rugs online. I really think that would help.

I think new curtain panels (current grommet style too casual for room) in a more luxe fabric, BHG has beautiful and affordable lined sateen ones in various patterns/prints, and a coordinating area rug will give you the look you want with the furniture you have. I do agree with previous posters about getting rid of the placemats and funding a great centerpiece. Your house is lovely, your things are lovely, you just need a few tweaks.

Ok so I need a rug to offset the bad furniture choices... And remove the console with a large piece of art? Centre pieces should be tall flowers? Should I put anything in replacement to the console? The room looks super empty with out the console.... Do I keep the curtains even though they don't match????

Aruna- your furniture choices aren't bad, all your pieces really are lovely. Unless you are a professional decorator with either an unlimited budget or a nearly unlimited warehouse of decor for staging, it will take you awhile to get your house the way you want it. And that's ok. Half the fun lies in getting there, in finding those special pieces and great deals for your home. There are some amazingly talented people on this site who will give you great advice, but at the end of the day, it's just someone's opinion. Buy what you love, bc it's YOUR house

I think once you get the right rug in the space, it is going to make a big difference in how the room looks. I have no problem with the furniture, I just don't think the console is needed. If you do not have another place for it then keep it there.

Find a rug, move the horizontal picture, stage your buffet with a couple of lamps. You will need a large piece over the console whether you keep it or not. But save that for last.

It's a pretty room with pretty table and chairs and something of a pompous chandelier that sets an arrogant tone for the room. Maybe a more down to earth light fixture would be less off-putting. A large scale art piece over the console, done in colors to include your floor color and chairs color would help you pull that lovely room together.
