Recommendation for gas range

Late spring or early summer we are looking to buy a slide in gas range with convection oven. The gas piping needs to be run that is the hold up. Any recommendations on what to buy and/or anything I should stay away from. Thanks

Atkillery, is that a double oven? I only have room for a 30 inch.

Love my Bosch dual fuel 30"- also post this on the kitchen site - you'll get lots of answers.

I'd recommend the appliance forum as well.... there are lots of feedback there

Would not recommend KitchenAid. I had one and the stainless corroded. Same thing happened to a friend with same KA range only electric.

Thanks, I will post on the appliance forum.

3katz, good to know, thank you.

Yes it is a double oven but they make 30" as well.

I wish I would not have gotten sealed burners. I thought it sounded like a great idea. And then the oatmeal boiled over.

Loved the options on our GE Profile but it's been a bust. First it has the black enamil under the grids that is soooo hard to keep clean. I've been very consignate in the way I've cared for it, and still the enamil hasn't held up well. There are spots that look like grease around the burners (but it isn't) and it makes it look dirty. The enamil has markings from the grids, one of the burners is now tricky about how it comes on and once you start using the stove, if the metal pieces that cover the burners get food or grease on them, it stains immediately and they will never look the same. The probe feature never worked, learned that the hard way when after 3 years we decided to give it a try for Thanksgiving. Most recently, when I bake without using the convection feature, the oven isn't heating up right. So now it really needs to be looked at. On the other hand, we do eat a lot of roasted chicken and the convection roast feature has not disappointed. It hasn't lasted 10 years and instead of fixing it, I'm seriously considering replacing it instead. So far from what I've researched Bosch is the most appealing to me.

I was thinking of sealed burners, will have to rethink that now.

I am taking the GE profile off my list,

    thanks

We have an LG and love the features but it has a terrible engineering flaw with its knobs. It's a "known issue" in which the plastic housing cracks and the knobs become useless. Unless they've redesigned I would stay away from LG.

thank you panko, off my list.

3katzforme, is your Kitchenaid a newer model? I am reading good reviews about this brand right now.

We have this kenmore and I love it. it has a warming drawer, it's convection

the burners are self contained. It has a double hot burner on the right side.

the top cleans beautifully, if I get any stuck on stains I just hit it with a little

oven cleaner. The center is an oval burner and it also comes with a

flat grill for the center. What was important to me was a flat front where

the burners are, as my previous stove was slanted up and it got greasy

from cooking/frying. If you wait for a good sale you can get it for under

    2k. http://www.sears.com/kenmore-elite-4.5-cu-ft-self-clean-gas/p-02232363000P?prdNo=11&blockNo=11&blockType=G11

aktillery, beautiful kitchen and stove. :)

My KA is probably 8 years old. One would think they've fixed that problem by now but the fact they had it in the first place now prevents me from buying another KA appliance.

I've never had any problem with sealed burners.

For 10 years, I used a Kenmore 30" dual-fuel slide-in similar to the one that cliff_and_joann posted. Mine had 4 gas burners, plus a keep-warm electric burner, plus a warming drawer. I never had an issue with it. I wanted a 36" range this time, so I splurged on a Thermador dual-fuel for my new kitchen,

joan, not quite understanding the flat front?

I am reading that the closed burners are an issue. The ceramic part can crack. The open grills will last forever. I am not sure about the cleaning part though, how difficult it is to clean,

Firstly, it's very easy to clean. Once a week I put the grills in the

dish washer. The grills are heavy though. During the week I just lift

off the left one to clean the top, I slide the other two to the left

to clean under them. The front is only slightly pitched up. If you look

at other stoves the knobs are slanted up a lot, thus they accululate

    grease daily.

By self contained burners -- I mean the top is firmly attached to the

burners. We love to cook, so it gets a workout. As I said before,

i use spray oven cleaner on the spots that I can't get out with

    regular cleaner.

I have a 36" KA dual fuel with convection and LOVE it! Never had a single problem with it and we have had it almost 5 years.

    Have you considered induction?

User thanked Nothing Left to Say

I've had a GE Profile for 4 years......no problems. I will take an SOS pad and rub gently around the burners to get what I can't get with regular cleaner, but will definitely try oven cleaner as suggested by Cliff/Jo. I do agree with C/J about getting a flat front,...I'm constantly wiping the slanted front, knobs, etc.

crk, no I havent considered induction since I read about how the pots jiggle off the cooking surface and I dont want a glass top.

Nothing is easy these days, so many choices, so many options! Now I am sort of looking at the double oven option in the 30 inch models. I only cook for DH and myself most times, so I could really see using a smaller oven a lot of the time.

I have had an induction range for over three years now and have never had a pot jiggle at all much less off the cooking surface. Never even heard of that!

As far as the glass top surface, I am not sure why you specifically do not want one. I have cooked with radiant electric, gas and induction, and induction is by far the easiest surface to keep clean. I have not ever spent more than five minutes cleaning my induction cooking surface. It's amazing. It also heats much faster than gas and changes temperature more quickly than gas. Additionally, it doesn't heat up the cooking surface or kitchen like gas does.

I suggest reading the induction threads on the appliances forum before deciding. I have found them very helpful.

Don't get one with a black top. Mine has a black top (the rest is SS). The black top is very difficult to keep clean.

I also have a black GE Profile. I had to have a small repair while still under warranty and it has worked fine for the past 13 years. I do not give it much of a workout since I don't cook a lot. I also have the same problem with the grills and pans that was mentioned before. I would never buy a black appliance again as long as I live. It is a PITA to keep clean.

Joonie, just turn on the burner for a minute to warm the area, then

spray the spots, wait a few minutes and rub it with a soft tooth brush

then wipe down with water and a sponge.

I have a 12 year old 30" dual fuel with convection Dacor range. No issues.

Thanks C/J! Any brand of oven cleaner?

My DB and SIL have a love/hate relationship with their Dacor. Correct temp seems to be a problem. One Thanksgiving we were transporting a half-cooked turkey to the out-of-town neighbor's house to finish roasting.

I've never had any issues with either of our sealed burner ranges ---- they are very easy to keep clean. The one with the stainless top is definitely easier to keep speck free.... Do you have a budget in mind? There are some higher end ranges in 30", with open burners, but not all dual fuel and most with single ovens. Color or style preferences?.

Joanie, I buy it in the dollar store for a dollar. The brand is 'the Home Store'

    it's in a spray can.

I would love a Wolf, something about those big red knobs...

Well, we ended up going out looking at gas ranges. We dont have to wait til spring, as the gas piping is being done indoors. I looked at many models and brands and like everything else there are lemons in every brand when talking to the sales persons. I took DH with me, which sometimes is not a good thing. We ended up buying a Kitchenaid, sealed burners and a gas convection oven. Not exactly what I thought I was going to get, but got convinced and sometimes he needs to win.....so we'll see how this works out. I have never baked or roasted in a gas oven but I understand meats are more moist and tender. It has a few good features, like steam cleaning, temperature conversion, even heat convection and I like the stream lined look of it, Should have it installed at the end of the month.

Does that range have aqualift cleaning? If so I really urge you to search that term in the appliances forum right away before you get stuck with it. It is universally despised as it does not work.

Thanks for the link crl. I was never comfortable using the conventional self cleaning method with the high heat. I usually spot clean the oven when necessary and I dont broil so I think this cleaning method will be ok for me.

Beautiful ranges. Gosh I love that O'Keefe and Merritt. I haven't cooked on a gas range in about 20 years but I grew up with it. I've only had electric since then and now have induction. Good luck!

thanks gsciencechick. Gosh is right, there are some gorgeous ranges out there, along with some outrageous prices imo.

Congrats! When I finally convince DH, I may have to dig this thread up to see how you like it! Convection when roasting is amazing. The best chicken ever is Amish that's been convection roasted, yum!!!

Thanks lukkiirish! I have owned convection ovens before, even the one I am replacing has electric convection, but this new gas stove has gas convection, which I have never had, so it will be interesting to see how much better the roasts will be.

We have a dual fuel Kitchen Aid 30" range, no prob with the stainless finish but i dont love it. The glass in the door cracked a few years ago and it was an expensive replacement. And i would rather have two ovens anyway. This one was purchased by the previous owner and was one of KA's initial "architect" series. So far we have gotten rid of most of the KA appliances that were here but to its credit the range will not die.

The one I am replacing is the electric Kitchenaid architect series range. I have had Kitchenaid appliances in the last 4 homes I have owned and havent had any issues with the brand. Mind you the longest I was in those homes was 5 years.

RoseAbbey!. Have you gotten your stove yet? I was able to talk my DH into a new stove a couple of weeks ago and after several delivery problems with Best Buy (will never ever ever shop there again) our new Samsung is being delivered tomorrow by Home Depot. I almost went with the KA, but the Samsung has really great reviews and was a match to our refridge.. If I post a pic, will you post one too?

Very pretty Raven, I know a lot of people like the KA double oven option as well as the dual fuel. I would love double ovens but that wasn't a set up I thought I could easily get used to, so I'm thinking an microwave / oven combo might be a good option eventually. Oddly there aren't many double oven slide ins.

Oh wow, that looks beautiful RoseAbbey! I'm so glad you're happy with the outcome. I haven't had a chance to really use ours yet but I suspect I'll be really happy with it.

I've been disappointed with my Capital Culinarian. I've had to replace the starter twice and the broiler unit once, all in 4 years. Maybe I got a lemon?
