They look like some sort of a ficus. Ficus species is very popular as a bonsai subject. But you say the leaves have a nice scent and that could indicate some other plant. Did they ever have any flowers? May be someone else here can help in identifying them.

Bonsai literally means plant in a pot. So what have is a bonsai. But it refers to the art of growing plants in small containers and give the impression of a large mature tree in nature. That involves understanding how to make a plant thrive in a small container. Pruning, trimming and shaping the tree to resemble a mature tree. Have fun.

These 3 were among my first few plants, so yes--iffy soil for a while. I'll follow Eugenia growing instructions closely and see how it does.
