Good morning ollds! And happy Friday, no small thing, right? The day we wait for all week?

Well, we got some good news yesterday - remember I was asking you all how to fight a speeding ticket? R got one in December? We requested a trial by mail, submitted every piece of paperwork we could, and got the decision yesterday, NOT GUILTY!!! Woo Hoo! The judgement came back that the CHP officer had insufficient evidence of him speeding! And since he really is one of the slowest drivers on earth, I think it was a good decision.

What's on everyone's plate for today?

Not sure about MP, but I already know what you're thinking! ;) lol
  • 13 years ago
YOU!! I'm in the San Joaquin Valley, David is in Sonoma, Darzy is in Rockland and who am I forgetting? Oh I just know I'm going to hear about this one. Again. MP is a Californian wannabe, and we have ollds in Australia and Scotland! Canada too! Oh, was it olldj22 in California? Getting old is not for wimps.

Ugghh, rub it in. I love snow, don't get me wrong. Love it! But after 12inches back to back, I'm a little over it. The drifts are so high from plows, you have to pull out before turning corners so you don't hit cars. It's more snow at one time then we've seen in ages. Bobbi, you will love this... Cut all my hair off the other day because I realized baseball caps and showboats don't go together. Got bored and the scissors came out.
    Where did you grow up?
TK, I'm ready for some chopping too. Unbearably hot weather and power surges are not a good combination. I can remember my father waiting patiently for the plow to come down out street.....and then giving up and shoveling the driveway......and then the plow came down our street and blocked our driveway!
guys and gals....MIA today I know, but I had pressing business to attend! good lord I hope I remembered everything is all I have to say! Off this weekend, so I'll be hangin with the pups!
love to you all and have a great weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bobbi, downtown had to do a massive tow procedure because plows couldn't get through and people wouldn't move their cars from one side of the street to the other.

They just made a path outside of our door because the plows had covered up all walkways. I can't help but wonder how many fire-hydrants have been covered up. I'm sure the plows have procedures but on private sheets with private companies, I wonder how much they pay attention to that kind of stuff when we don't get this kind of snow normally.

Btw Bobbi, did you know that computers have that allergy too?

I have found that out when my computer passed-out the other day. I've opened it up to see what is going on and find a mix of dust and fur (did you know that dust creates static electricity?).

So I zoomed to my favorite electronics store - Fry's (this place is for me as Disneyland is for my two little princesses), got a compressed air can and a new power supply which was burned out. Brought my computer back to life

Overland, I found that out the hard way! Old laptop was slower then molasses in January, bought a new one, hubby (ha! electronics technician!) used the air can on the old one, good as new! Grrrrr......

No worries about the accent. My mother's been here since 1968 and she still talks like she's from New Joisey!

    You cannot be away for an hour from our OLLD. Tras, hi; mp, help bobbi and me with my front door color; Darzy, with you on the 300.00 one. Overstated or not, always a good idea to throw extra $ toward your mortgage. That is the least of her problems;
roo, wake up; bobbi, what if the floor (countertop) gets wet? Wouldn't it split? O R &B, maybe you can help mp with her computer.

Hi, Dali, sweet little girl. Are you being good when Mommy is at work?

CP having a great time in FLA. Playing tennis every day. Last night the 3 guys made a fried turkey in one of those oil deep fryer things. A fourteen pound turkey and about a pound left over. These are three men who weigh the same as they did in college. How does that happen?

Oh, to you Californians, I just had a jarred salsa, mango, and the label was Santa Barbara. Out of this world.
Judy, when I first read about the door I thought black. But, I loved my black door when we had it, so I'm a little partial.

Bobbi, you could use a marine varnish on it to keep the water repellant.
    thanks, tras

Grrrrrrrrrrrr, Just a momentary reaction to a dilemma. Nancy, Nancy…..

Morning - Judy roo is awake just takes so damned long to get through all the chat and it seems I slept through all the fun.

Day 4 of our 40 days is pouring down as predicted.

Welcome Overland, great to have another rooster. Yes Bobbi, J22 is in LA, and Overland I relate to LA as my #2 joey is now a permanent resident there, along with Yank SIL and 2 grands.

Judy I'd love an ocean grey/blue for the front door, but it does depend on the exterior colour of the house.

Bobbi I would worry about the laminate and water, also doesn't it have grooves between the planks? That is sort of asking for mould, soapscum and general gunk. There is a special moulding you get for the edging of laminate in lieu of skirtings - or baseboards as you call them - maybe that would make a good edging.

Tras, I saw on TV last night a 2 year old in Kansas who can put balls through a hoop from any direction or distance. He was absolutely amazing. Of course I thought of you when they said Kansas.

Actually Kutchie's comments today made me think maybe HE was the K-Mart guy.

No one found this on Houzz?

Ok! IF I did the laminate, I would coat it with marine varnish like I said above!!! No groovy problems, no mold, no mildew. Maybe a few barnacles?
  • PRO
Bobbi - I would think that the cheap laminate would be prone to moisture getting between the boards and causing the backing to swell and delaminate. Yes, you could probably waterproof it with a marine grade varnish or a pourable epoxy, but why go to all that effort and expense so that you could use a cheap base material which might not hold up?

If mitering the edges is a no go for you, how about using a piece of solid wood trim as the edging? I was thinking perhaps doorstop would be a nice profile - it's about an inch tall with a slight profile but nothing fancy to make it difficult to work with. We did tile countertops in a project house which we edged with pieces of antique maple flooring salvaged from our scrap heap.

Front door color - I love the deep greenish black doors common in the Netherlands - I think they call the color canal green. Some of the doors have a blueish tone like a really dark teal color.

Just as important as the color is the finish of a painted door. I love the European polished smooth, high gloss enamels and I would love to do that to my front door. I've seen the website for Fine Paints of Europe where they sell the high end fillers and paints but I haven't gotten ambitious enough to try them. I don't normally pay that much for paint, but I would like to have a show stopper front door

me the K-Mart Guy..... I'll have you know I wouldn't be caught dead in a K-mart.... why, I'd have to give up my Target Red Club membership card....
Linda, would using an oil based enamel give you the depth of gloss you are talking? I like to use oil on my woodwork and doors - a lot seems to depend on colour as to how glossy the finish is.

    Hi Guys and Gals
so 10 minute read to catch up on your various topics:
Curb cruising: In Switzerland every two months in some villages, people can put out their unwanted heavy objects. It is actually meant to be scrap metal but in reality that accounts for 10% of what is put out. Diehards are out there at 0600 looking at the pickings. And I have to admit that while jogging one day, I cam across a set of great 1960's chrome and white plastic kitchen chairs that I picked up... and have now stored in the garage. The feel of the great find is now somewhat outweighing the clutter they make in the garage - haven't had time to deal with them!

Hi there Overland - even if californians outweigh most of us, you are outnumbered on a gender ratio! But I think you get the great humour, help and comments at this virtual coffee house!

Roo - sorry about your rain, as you enter fall we enter Spring. Right now I am up a mountain with glorious sunshine and about to ski the stress of the week off today!!! It has been a helluva week.

STK - I find you are like an onion that one peels to discover different coloured layers underneath each one!!! Still laughing about your elevator trick!

Dave - I have a friend architect moving from CH to Sonama end of year - going to mention you to her next week. They are going to build

All the other hens, MP, Bobbi, Darzy, Julie, and anyone else I forgot (sorry) Look after yourselves, have fun designing and dilemma-ing and have a great weekend and see you on the threads
  • 13 years ago
ASV - I guess we will grant you your lovely ski after a very stressful week. What a way to go!!!

Antoinette - We only have bulk trash pick-up twice a year, but 3/4 of my stuff "vanishes", before the truck comes!
    last modified: 13 years ago
Yes, we do too Astraea, but we are mean, the pros start the rounds in their trucks a few days beforehand and cause absolute traffic jams, so we wait till they go and put everything out just on dark. I did have a big clean out of my kitchen one year and just tossed every baking dish and cake tin, they were all so old and yukky. I had all mum's stuff too including all her old saucepans. I was in the middle of doing it and had made one trip to the footpath and had about 3 or 4 more to go, when a guy stopped collecting metal, so I invited him in and let him do all the work. BH couldn't believe I did it, but I figured as he was going to make money out of it, then he could earn it.

Ironwood...CH is Switzerland or Confederation of Helvetia as they were once known I think????
Why don't they use SZ or something......?
Yes, now you mention it all my old Swiss stamps have Helvetia on them. It is Latin for Switzerland.
Roo - I'm happy when people "recycle" things I can't fix or are obsolete; I just hate when I stack things up neatly in a corner, but people just toss things around looking thru them!!
Fortunately, we don't get too much of that, even the pros are very careful, and we have 60 feet to spread all our stuff out over so it hasn't been a problem. The idiot carers next door are the bigger problem they put recycling stuff out that they are not supposed to and pile boxes of stuff up so they fall over - last time there were old clothes everywhere. They also put their garbage out in plastic bags without a lid and the turkeys have a wonderful time ripping the bags open and scattering stuff everywhere. Fortunately, it doesn't come down to our place, so they have all the cleaning up to do themselves.

Julie - you are right on the money - CH = Confederation Helvetique and we celebrated our 700 year anniversary in 1991

Roo what are you doing with Swiss stamps?
I am so far behind today that I can't start on today until I finish yesterday, lol.

bobbi-- what time is the BBQ? Count me in! What should I bring? Something chocolate?!
Btw, okay for Christie to become pres, but he is NOT going to CA! Trust me, that man is Joisy through and through!

Overland--Welcome! Don't ever lose the accent, it is what makes you, You! Haven't lived in NY for 16 years, but you should hear me tawk! Fuhgheddaboudit!

ASV-- We used to have the one day a year thing of big junk collection. (My favorite trash day of the year!) But now they say they can't afford it because people had too much junk last time. (Well yeah, when you wait too many years for them to offer a day, it builds up. Mostly it is out in everyone's backyard or on their front porch...)

You could hear the cars coming and going up and down the block in the dark. Guess everyone thought we must have good junk around here like Astraea! It was like backwards Christmas the next morning. Instead of seeing what you got, you went to see what was still left in front of your house. One year, someone even stopped to take the neighbor's "golden toilet" as my sarcastic teen daughter referred to it.

My best find by the side of the road--An old oak filing cabinet. 3 file size drawers on the bottom that fit on a base, topped by za bunch of couple inch deep drawers to handle papers and files lying down. Another piece topped the whole thing off. OUT AT THE CURB! like it was junk. Don't know if I squealed the brakes on my car when I stopped and threw it in my little Ford Escort with the hatchback!

Astraea--You must just have good junk if it's almost all gone!

    trasgorshek--Thanks for the welcome!

Okay, now over to today's post to see if anyone has gotten into trouble yet. Fingers crossed! Just kidding.

ASV - My father was an avid stamp collector and introduced me to it - much to my mother's disgust. Funny story, my father got the mumps and was confined to bed. Being bored he started working on his stamp collection and of course I had to 'help' him. End result, I got the mumps too and then passed them on to my little brother. My mother never forgave me for that and we were never allowed to talk stamps when she was around.

Anyway I inherited my father's collection plus have my own still. Don't do much with it these days. Probably, knowing my luck, I have nothing valuable but every so often I try to check out what I have as I would sell them. No one else in the family is interested.
Morning roo! Interesting story about your stamp collecting! Are they new stamps, or from envelopes?

What's happening in your world today, do you have any g-string shoe stories for us?
Bobbi - stamps are mixed, we just collected without being fanatical like some collectors can be.

More rain today and still chilly but not as bad as the last 2 days. Have to start scrubbing floors today ready for the carpet. I want to give them the extra day to dry out in this wet.
