Bamboo

Hi there, do you find that your bamboo spreads quickly? Regarding its Growth, would you say it's faster than an evergreen hedge? Have your neighbours complained about it spreading into their yard(s)?

Great question! This bamboo is a 'running' bamboo/ Yellow Groove. And it does need containment with proper bamboo barrier as well as monitoring yearly. I'd suggest reading up on containment or talking with a bamboo nursery. There are also 'clumping' bamboos that do not run, but may not be hardy in your area. In terms of growth, bamboo grows differently than an evergreen hedge. I would say in general it fills in more quickly than 'broadleaf evergreen' such as a laurel or viburnum. Attached photo below was takes right after installation and two years earlier than the photo you reference above, so its filled in quite a bit already. Bamboo sends out new canes once a year. These canes quickly (within a few weeks) reach 'mature' height and then stop, which is different than typical shrubs. As the plant gets more established the new canes tend to grow taller before stopping.

BTW: No complaints from neighbors, but this bamboo is being monitored by owners. Be sure you are up on the maintenance needs of this plant prior to planting! Best to you on your project!
