I've also thought about going with a slightly darker grout, maybe a taupe gray color with the smaller tile. Thoughts about that??

Not sure about either one--both appear to be bright white. Perhaps a photo of the tiles next to your cabinetry would be helpful.

As for size, I do like the small, but not with a contrasting grout color. :))

I like the simplicity of the subway tile. Have you considered a glass mosaic option?

iStage, I had kind of crossed off glass tile because I always think of contemporary styles with it. Any idea pictures of what you had in mind?

I prefer the larger tiles.

I would pick a color from the countertop for the backsplash, not white. White will be boring.

Do you think these tiles might be just a tad too white with your countertops? I'm wondering if it may be better to go with an almond or taupe subway to blend with the countertops more...

I have to agree with tgb1. I feel a little color would be good to blend the countertops with the cabinets. You don't have to go dark just complementary to the look of the kitchen.

Tgb, I'm looking at the first pic I posted, and the tiles do look a lot more white than the cabinets and the counter. In person, the tiles match the cabinets. I was definitely wanting to brighten things up in the kitchen. We had all dark cabinets before.

Can you two give me some pictures of what you have in mind?

Let me see if I can find a pic. I completely understand about wanting to keep things light. Can you tell us the name of your granite?

We don't like grout to "stand out" the star is the tile or the stone...not the grout. Both of your white tiles are very similar and neutral but a bit stark in the "white" next to what appears to be slightly warmer tone of stone and cabinet. But I have to agree with he above post that asks have you thought about a more unique option in a glass tile or some color...like taupe if you are wanting to stay in a neutral tone throughout? Or a classic mosaic that enhances the beauty of your counter top?

And what is your paint color? Your walls are already painted, correct?

Don't go with glass mosaic. Stay with the subway tiles. Take some more samples home and see how some with a little color look. Try and pull out some colors of your tops. The ones you have are fine but safe.

It's beautiful. Does it have more gray tones than taupe-ish tones?

The cabinets are painted SW Alabaster and the walls are a 50/50 mix of Believable Buff and Navajo White.

It's definitely more warm in its tones. So I'd say more creams and taupes.

Also don't tile the side wall of the backsplash. Leave it painted. Only tile on the back walls under the cabinets.

Agree with Bradson about no glass tiles and only tile the back wall of the splash, no side wall. Considering the counters are warm and your paint color is warm, I would definitely prefer a bit warmer of a subway tile. Do you have a piece of the stone that you could take to your tile shop? It also looks like your cabinet pulls are ORB, so warmer would look better with that too imo...

Yes, I agree with Bradson Flooring---No glass mosaic.

The granite has a lot of pattern and color and your floor is laid in a herringbone pattern so I HIGHLY recommend a very quiet backsplash. As much as I love these subtle tone on tone tiles for your splash, they would compete too much with the floor and/or granite.

I have a couple "cutting boards" the fabricator gave me. So I can bring those with me.

We used the small subway tile, and love it. Because of other colors in room, it seemed to add detail without competing.

I like the larger subway tiles. They'll look beautiful and timeless.

Oh I like the smaller ones... Just something about them that brings the area out more

Natalie, I agree with the quiet backsplash due to all the other patterns in the floor and granite. I'm aiming for a classic kitchen with classic colors. And then I can always change out accessories with punches of color. Maybe I'll do some more tile shopping and see if I find any that I love that blend with the granite more.

Ok, so is this the "in" thing to not tile the side wall?? I guess I've never really looked to see if people are tiling it anymore. I'm looking at hhhh's picture and it doesn't look like she tiled hers either (on the left side). So what does everyone thing? No backsplash on the sidewall?

Here are a couple of pics. Our cabinet and counter colors look similar. As far as tiling sides- 1 side of counter in previous pic is pantry unit. The other wall wasn't planned but during Reno we found a heating duct and couldn't afford to replace, so I just left it white. Wasn't sure of best solution.

I don't know if it's the 'in' thing to not tile the side, I just think it looks awful when the side gets tiled. Much neater to keep it in the back...

Beautiful - I like both options, but lean more towards the larger tiles because of the less grout factor.... either way I think white and clean is the way to go =)
