My opinion on the arch is how does it relate to the rest of your house? I put in one arch in a space with a funky wall to hide a problem. But if you have a very contemporary house then an arch might look "off." On the other hand if your house is more traditional, then an arch may look fine. It is impossible to tell from this little picture - look at the big picture meaning how the arches will incorporate with your overall design scheme.

And on the issue of you each wanting something different - my advice is to learn to compromise. One way is to each pick an important element in the room you each like. Another is to allow one spouse to have complete design control over "their room." Either way, the issue isn't about winning, it is about keeping your spouse happy.
