H. PurpleRain...is it a fertil variety?

Hi friends! I hope all you are right and enjoying your Hippeastrums. The blooming season beginning just now (in Mexico)

I have a question about H. PurpleRain. The last year this variety have a beautiful blooming period. It give me 2 spikes, 8 flowers in total...I try obtain seeds and make a lot of crosses...1 variety for each flower but I haven't any success.

I believe this variety is Triploid...what do you think about it??? Do you have seeds from it???

Dear George, my Purple Rain said YES to Tosca, papilio and a little pink double that looks like Zombie. So there's hope. Have you tried pollen in the microwave, maybe it's just an urban, or gardener's, legend but I tried it on my Lagoon and it worked!....who knows, Maybe I end up with seedlings looking like the chupacabras : )

I am having the same problem with Tosca, up to now only self pollination has occurred, which is good, very good bacause it is such a beauty that it would be excellent to obtain different versions of her....and so is PR.

Hola Rosina, bueno yo no intente su autopolinizacion pero en vista de que ninguna otra de las 8 variedades que usé entre diploides y tetraploides funcionó, dudo que sea autopolinizable. Me parecía una variedad hermosa para obtener híbridos muy bellos pero no obtuve ningún resultado. Ahora compre 2 bulbos más que están por ofrecer, así que serán 3 bulbos para experimentar jaja. También usare esta vez el polen de ella sobre otras variedades.

Hola George, so you are saying that you tried PR with pollen from 8 different hippies, dip and tetra and nothing worked....and that you doubt it could be self....and you bought 3 more bulbs to keep experimenting and of course, you'd continue to try PR pollen on other plants....well, I am also starting with PR now, let's hope she accepts pollen from some plant. I'll let you know what happens with my PR. *George, I am originally from San Nicolas de Los Garza, so Viva El Norte!

Wow, very near to my city. I'm from Saltillo, Coahuila hahahahaha. Viva el Norte, el cabrito y las tortillas de harina. Sí señor!

No success with PR as a pod parent but I did get seeds by putting its pollen on Amigo and a no ID white. They are growing well.

George, that is just a gorgeous picture of Purple Rain!!! Now, I don't even have one but if I did I think I would go heavy on the papilio pollen even doing more than one flower in the hopes that I just might end up with a few seeds!!! Can you just imagine what a flower between those two would look like!!!

I just thought I'd add that a few years ago I got one pod on Santos x Chico and it yielded only a few good seeds of which just 2 germinated and just 1 has a stripe. I tried this cross the next two times my Santos bloomed thinking I would surely have another success since it sort of worked the first time, but it didn't. So it just goes to show, keep trying even if you fail several times, it only takes once to yield a few special seeds!! Good Luck!! ☺☺

Rosina, Keep your fingers crossed for that Purple Rain x papilio!!! That's what I suggested George do and you've already done it!!! I can see the flowers already......and they'll be gorgeous!!☺☺

Who knows Donna, but I am celebrating already! Brazza seems to like Papilio pollen but Lagoon, Tosca ( I mean, you have some Papilio in you! Why can't you be just a little bit like your sister Purple Rain?) and another beautiful dark red velvety rejected it. My fat and healthy looking seed pods from a coral striped and Elvas aborted, 3 gone just one remaining, ..I still have a lot to learn: perseverance, patience, tolerance, how to mix a mezcal Margarita....
