Change for the sake of change. If it's not broke, don't try to fix it with a fad. It will only drag something classic down to the trend level.

Thoughtless, knee jerk suggestions, to paint quality wood or brick. And the flat uninteresting results from such suggestions.

Gray anything. Too many people view the gray trend as "safe" as an easy default that will make a room look "updated". It isn't.

Kitchen islands unsafely shoehorned into spaces that were never meant to have them.

Short attention span text-posters who expect people to use their psychic powers to see all the measurements, pictures, and background of a room in the monosyllabic post titled "help" with the entire post consisting of "couch living room".

And the inevitable response to the above being "paint it gray".

live_wire_oak said it all! But when it comes to your personal space if you are not thinking of selling in the next couple of years, do what you love, because even if you play it safe, things will look dated (and worn) in time. Since you are staging not decorating, though, your goals are different.

Gray paint everywhere. Open concept living areas...with kitchens totally exposed to the living room. How do your saute garlic w/o having the smell permeate the whole house?

@threers- I don't have an open concept house and when I saute garlic- it permeates my whole house also!! :)

Busy backsplashes with already highly-patterned granite counters. Makes my head spin!

The colors are really off in this example, but it bothers me even when the colors are in sync. Aye-yi-yi!

@chloebud I completely agree!! I am surprised this trend has lasted as long as it has :/

"Quotes" paintings are my big dislike right now. I think they'd be cute in kids or teen rooms, but not so much in adult spaces. I also really hate the "open concept" feel in a home. While I like open airy feeling spaces, I like some kind of divide between different spaces. These huge rectangular kitchen/living/dining areas that are only broken up by furniture remind me of oversized studio apartments. Even a dining nook or eat in kitchen is better than having your dining set in the middle of the living room. We had that arrangement in 2 prior places and I just hated it. So much happier with our new condo that has a breakfast bar dividing the kitchen from the living room and a dining area off the living room, but visually it's own distinct area.

@Diane- cannot believe people would actually put a coffee bar in their bedroom! Why? Too lazy to walk to the kitchen to get a cup of coffee? I know the coffee bar in our dining area is a constant battle to keep clean (coffee grounds, drips, splashes etc...). Why would you want that mess in your bedroom?
