Hello,

I would like some help furnishing this mother in law apartment dining/living room and keep an open plan.

The challenges are: big windows on the left, cable outlets on the large wall. Where would be a good place for a sofa sleeper? If a place the sofa in the middle facing the large wall would it cause the room to feel small?

Which wall are you calling the cable wall? From the bar down the hall or opposite the entry door?

What are the dimensions of the space? Will this be the bedroom also? Is that the reason for sleeper sofa?

Easy dining and entertaining with a drop leaf table behind the sleeper sofa

If mom enjoys books, a pair of low bookcases or etageres can go on the long wall. I'd add art above them. Use two ceramic gardens stools with the chairs for tables, and they can be used as stools when needed (see one in top photo.)

I put the sleeper sofa where it is so if she has to use it every night it will be accessible. The 2 small ottomans are easily moved and there is plenty of room around the bed when it's open. A table and lamp beside sofa will be there for her at night for TV watching or reading.

Sofa beds are not comfortable IMO. I would consider a regular bed instead if this is a studio setup.

I presumed the sofa bed was for overnights by the grands, not for your mom.

Add lighting under the upper cabinets, Mom will be grateful.

Thank you all for the input. A little more info about the place:

2 small bedrooms. We are planning on a Arbnb. The sofa sleeper would be for occasional use as a back up.

    The measurements are:

long wall (4 windows)- 243 in

wall opposite to front door 155 in (from bar to entrance to hallway)

    front door wall 74 in

    Hope this helps!

How much seating do you need? I am staying with my original plan above. Tell me if there is a need to add more chairs. You don't want the space overrun with furniture.

Assuming 4-6 guests. Will you serve breakfast elsewhere or will they prepare their own meals? If you need the table, you might consider re-carpeting to cover that portion of kitchen flooring that comes into the living space. Lower stools for the bar would be useful, especially if you don't serve meals down here. A game/snack table for 4 might be better. Swivel chairs can turn to TV, hassocks can provide additional seating.

Multi-use furniture is great for accommodating additional guests. The example below includes storage ottomans that could double as coffee/side tables and dining seats.
