Hoya potting mixes

I just thought I'd post about the mixes I use for rapidly expanding hoya collection. I also grow bromeliads and orchids, so there is always some overlap.

first is Debco cacti mix. I use this mixed with more fine orchid bark. It's OK, being mostly fine pine bark crumbles and grit is good for bromeliads and cruxifix orchids, but there are better options for hoya.

Searles cym and brom mix is really good for hoyas I've found. It's made up of coal ash, peanut husks and chunky pine bark among other things.

Lastly Scotts orchid mix, a blend of coir chunks and pine bark. It holds a bit too much water, but works well in coir baskets which can dry out quickly. Adding perlite or charcoal would improve it.

Obovata in the searles mix. The fines wash through in time and it becomes self-mulching. It's good stuff.

cummingiana var. Santos in the cacti mix/pine bark blend. You can see the quartz grit. This basket dries quite quickly, I should have added some coir orchid mix.
