LR/TV room re-do

Hi Everyone.

I am ready to purchase new sofa, love seat, and chair for our main LR/TV room. I am pretty sure I am going with Smith Brothers. I have read good reviews and think it will hold up well with our 3 kids, 7,8,10.

I would like to go with a gray soft velvety-like fabric for the sofa and love seat and I also found the other fabric in the pic for a small swivel chair.

My questions are:

1) Is the pattern on the fabric too modern for a more traditional rug (maybe oriental, maybe like a morrocan trellis, haven't purchased yet)

2) My room is painted BM Paris Rain which is a pale gray green. Will they look ok together?

3) What is a good accent color with these?

4) Does beige go with gray these days?

Thanks!!

I think they're a great combo! I could see a blue which leans toward an aqua shade as an accent color.

I think that's a nice fabric combo as well, and would work nicely with a more traditional rug. For an accent color, I'd look at smoky shades of purple, maybe one lighter and one darker. For instance:

I certainly hope gray goes with beige because that's what I have in my living room. The combination is accidental since the rug sample was greige and nothing like the gray color I ended up with.

I've seen rooms where the accent color with gray was yellow and it looked fabulous. The purple is beautiful, and you could have pillows in yellow and purple both. Lime green would probably also look good. I think an Oriental rug would go quite well if you choose a more transitional rather than very traditional pattern. esalerugs has very reasonable prices and you can return a rug without charge. I paid a lot of money to return a rug from overstock.com and it was only a 5 x 8, so never again.

What do you have in your room that is beige? It would be great if you could post some pictures. I'm attaching a picture of my beige and gray living room to give you an idea of the color combination.

Thank you all! Ingrid that is a very pretty room. I love the coffee table. I don't really have anything beige but I'm debating what to do with my current rug in that room. It has a beige background and no gray in it so im inclined to think I should get a new one. It is 14 years old and to be honest I'm kind of sick of it although it has held up remarkably well. Would the fabrics I posted be ok with this rug? It may only be for a little while and then I could buy a new rug but I'm trying to stick to a budget and the rug is a big portion of it. Thanks again for your help!

The green in your rug could almost pass for gray and the colors are soft and rather neutral, so I'm pretty sure it would go with your couch. I'm not so sure about the other pattern which is very modern and linear. There might be a bit of a clash there. Until we can see the color of your walls it will be difficult to tell whether gray will look good with them or not. Two of my walls in the living room are also a grayish green and I don't notice a clash. A lot can be done with accessories, area rugs, pillows, etc. to coordinate somewhat different colors. So far the only issue I can see is the pattern for the swivel chair. Are you already committed to that?

You will love Smith Brothers furniture! It is amazingly well made and comfortable.

I got a sofa and two chairs from Smith Brothers last fall, and they are super comfortable. I love them. Good luck with your re-do!

Thank you for your answers and positive remarks about Smith Brothers. I know their quality is supposed to be excellent. However, I struggled to find fabric I love and am not sold on those I posted. The SB furniture is not cheap (but is worth it IMO) but I am not sure I want to spend that kind of money on furniture if I don't love the fabric. I want a gray fabric similar to PB's Everyday Velvet and I didn't see that in SB. I really want to replace the rug too, hopefully sooner rather than later but I want to be certain about the fabric for the sofa and chair. If I buy the SB furniture, the rug will have to wait a few months but I don't want to decorate around it. Thanks again for everyone's input.

Ingrid- I wish I knew how to post a pic of the paint like turquoise did above but I don't! But if you look at BM Paris Rain, that is the color.

The Paris Rain is really pretty. Are you able to take a sample of the material home with you to compare it with the wall color? You don't want the two to be matchy-matchy anyway, and I think it would work but since you're talking about expensive furniture you need to be sure in your own mind. I think the gray velvet sample is beautiful but you seem to have doubts.

Good choice on the Smith Brothers Furniture. We just purchased our first Smoth Brothers Recliner, and we love it. I also live in a house of men, myself excluded, and considering men, boys, pets, and how rough they all are, I have only leather upholstery in my family room, which holds up wonderfully, all things considered. The only thing is, that it can scratch, so make sure the dogs nails are trimmed, and keep it sealed. Good luck!

Unless you are planning on a very plain rug in a solid or geometric, I would choose that before choosing upholstery fabric and wall colors. Finding fabric and paint to go with a rug is a LOT easier than the other way around.
