FRO Everybody!

last modified: 10 years ago

Dallas Beth's thread gave me an idea. Decided better not hijack her thread. Let's do FRO (first rose open). Option to tell when pruned, how much, and what camera/phone used? (plus your zone if it not in your name)

I misplaced my camera. This was taken with a Nikon Coolpix L-11 which is pocket size and too small for my hands to hold steady. I am impressed with color accuracy.

Lagerfeld -
Very light prune in early Jan. Central coast CA.

Until June!!! Auggghh. Altho this year round gardening does have its drawbacks. I'm pulling & filling boxfuls of weeds this week!

Jasmine - I like Julia's amber yellow color and the fact that she'll bloom early if not given a hard prune.

    Seil - FRO!

    Bumping up,

Here's my first rose, Nicole Carol Miller pruned in early January near Napa Valley, CA. Photo taken with iPhone 5 camera. Just planted another NCM because I love the color and fragrance!

Hope to see more of everyone's first roses soon!

    Ann

wow, ann!! i've never seen a NCM that deep of a color!! gawjus!!

    carol

Beautiful NCM! Love it! May need one...

Carol - I think we have similar taste in roses - my avatar is NCM, a mauve version of your Paradise, both very fragrant!

Redwolfdoc - highly recommend this rose but not sure how it does in colder climates. It's very prolific and disease free in my no-spray 9B microclimate.

Most of my rose garden was planted in the last 3 years during the worst of our drought. I'm looking forward to seeing how the roses do this spring after getting lots of El Nino rain this past winter. I think I'm going to see some much taller roses this year!

Oh my. Nicole Carol Miller is stunning. And quick to start. I think I need it.

my avatar is Paradise Found. but, yes I agree with you!! gotta love great fragrances!

Until then, I can enjoy all the pics from those of you in the warmer zones. Just finished pruning and will start fertilizing on Friday.

    carol

I love your cream rose towandaaz. It looks similar to a mini I bought a few weeks ago.

My first rose finally opened. Jeanne La Joie.

i've always thought of getting jeanne la joie. looks so pretty in your picture. what do you think of this rose??

    carol

Carol she has an amazing spring flush that last a long time with scattered bloom the rest of the year. I have big trees though that doesn't let her get the sun she needs I guess the rest of the year. Sweet little rose!!

Way to go Judy! Was she also your FRO last season?

    Sharlene

    yeah, darn trees. :)

Hey Sharlene! She usually is my first if one of my minis don't beat her. It's usually between the two. Judy

    Towandaaz, gorgeous white blend!

Prettypetals, the prettiest climbing rose combo I've ever seen was Jeanne La Joie with Eden. Stunning in full bloom.

My first rose to open is really a fluke, at least three weeks ahead of schedule. A not very big bloom of a normally medium size hybrid tea.

    Forgotten Dreams

I'm loving the green leaves too! Everything here is brown.

The red and the green are like magic together!!

    Carol

Mostly brown here too, Carol. Got a little green from the crocus, tulips and narcissi at least! Only crocus actually blooming, but it's a start!

I bet it was gorgeous irisgal!!

Sara, good EARLY start to the season. I just looked back at the post from last year. My first bloom was mid-May:( Hopefully mine will be ahead of schedule too!

    Sharlene

redwolf - I went and looked, and there is a little bit of green poking out of my perennial beds. Crocus is such an early blooming plant. It's lovely.

Wow to Mary Rose, Prettypetals. It's the one I should have planted instead of Heritage.
Matthew, your Perfect Moment is a match for a friend's noid. Thank you! Stunning Elina.
My Abraham D. isn't as pretty as yours Dan. It's being pink this flush also.

Despite yesterday's storm, Bolero opened, the cool weather giving it a cream color and pink highlights.
And Constellation. Both damaged by the storm, but both very fragrant.

I don't even want to include the deformed, ugly, tacky-gaudy Las Vegas colored Knockout, but to be honest, it is really the first flower that opened a couple of days ago.

The 'tacky-gaudy' rose looks great in your photo.

I agree!! And yay for your first rose of the year!!

    Carol

Same here! I think all roses are pretty - I just like some more than others. The Constellation bud is lovely!

    Sharlene

Haha! The two Knockout roses came with the house 4 years ago. I suppose there is a reason I haven't removed them. They do smell nice, and they do waft. Visitors comment on how much they like the color. It just doesn't match my plan for the garden which was for white or pale pink roses and blue/purple accent plants. So I try to come up with reasons to remove the knockouts. Of course, it turned out that my garden is thrip party central, so white and pale pink aren't working out so well anyway!
