"Creeser, I bought a sandal once with the G string thingy between the toes.... Ya, anyway I threw them out the window of the truck on Hwy 16.".......... had a girlfriend once who did that too.....oh, my bad, those were thong panties.........let's just call it one of those senior moments.

Morning all. Very quiet today - I always have a little bet with myself when I boot up the computer as to how many emails I will have. I was ranging between 80 and 120 this morning and got quite a shock when I only had 29. Weekends must quieten everyone down.

They are thongs, you nutters. Now you know why we have thong throwing competitions here......... meanwhile y'all practicing without even knowing it.

This may surprise you, but coments like that are quite abhorrent to us. It is a huge no no here, as weird as we can be, we are very green and any form of littering is frowned on. Drop something in the street and you yet jumped on. There are also steep fines and the litter police are everywhere.

Hey, Can, great to hear from you again. We have missed you. Yes the story of the microwave was unfinished and you were still deciding on paint colour for the gates. Don't suppose there is any progress there either. You must be knackered.

Judy - it was J22 who was talking about retirement and wasting time. Haven't heard from her for a while either.

    CALLING ROOSTERS!!

Help - what is the best way or what options are there for fixing squeaking floorboards please. I've heard of a few methods and about to troll Google but hoping you might know something.
I heard baby powder! Sprinkle some on the wood, work it into the space between the boards! But, what do I know, I'm just a hen. hehehe

Rings a bell Bobbi. Painter said something about gypsum??? I've also heard extra nails or screws.
Probably gypsum dust, like chalk dust I'm thinking.
Thanks Ez, I want to do it now while the carpet is up, to make it easier. The screws could be countersunk and filled if necessary. Just have to try to convince BH now.

Might be easier to try the powder or gypsum first.

While u guys were talking g string and sandals I took my dear client to shop for tile and fixtures for her about-to-be new bathroom.

    Here is what she picked:

12x24 for the floor, Caesar Stone for the countertop and glass mosaic for the backsplash. The vanity is espresso.

    What do you all think?

ROO, you are correct it was j22. Where has she been? Sorry, oldcan, I got my OLLD's mixed up.

Great day today. CP still in FLA. DD here for two days and she got me set up with a new printer and helped me clean out HIS stuff. I sent 12 bags of good clothes up to the soup pantry.

The other thing we did: washed cashmere sweaters in ammonia (1/4C), no soap, no fabric softener. Low temp dry and the sweaters came out brand new.

bobbi, thinking about the blue for the front door. Found this great color: BM grappa, a deep dark purple. ????

Has anyone used BM Silken Pine? I read it is a great color for a bedroom.

Astraea, I heard from that woman today and she is (thankfully) taking her son to a major Boston hosp for evaluation. I am hoping she may be identified with munchausen syndrome by the docs treating the baby.

O R & B, I like it, but the 12 x 24's look a little flat on my monitor. Any chance she would consider an additional tile and do two colors on the floor?

Overland, on first glance that made me think of my new bathroom. Unfortunately the flash has washed the colour out a bit. I have wall and floor tiles in a white on white pattern, the vanity is more a latte than an espresso, and I have a white stone top. I just love it, it is so clean looking and looks great all the time.

Actually I just realised I'm not quite sure what is what in your photo other than the backsplash?

Well I'm a chocolaholic - does that make us related? Most of us are retired so we're quite happy to fall off ALL the steps. I see you are in FLA, that is a first for us. Judy's husband is down there at the moment, you might run into him.

Judy, the shower wall tile have mixed color to it and that's staying... So we wanted to have something neutral/solid color on the floor. It's hard to see in the picture but it's actually have very little white accent to it.

Roo, the 12x24 (ginger color) is the tile for the floor - will be installed in a staggered pattern.
The small square is the countertop - Caesar Stone Chocolate Truffle #6350.
    The mosaic is the backsplash.
Overland, I like the white mosaic, fresh and clean looking. It could just be because it's so shiny. Actually, the counter top, that all those samples are on, is gorgeous with the white mosaic. That would be what I would pick, if I was ever so fortunate to tear my 1992 garbage can green 2pc. bathroom apart. But, hey what the heck do I know.
olldroo it's true, right out the window. Wouldn't think of doing that today and if you did, you'd probably get more than one evil eye as you were ran off the road. Oh yes, we have the garbage police here too. A cigarette butt on the ground will cost you hefty. Around here, we have been on a going green and greener for 25 years. Everyone is onboard, reduce, reuse, recycle, bottle deposits, biodegradable everything, compost, large item pick up days, recycling centres, bottle depots etc, etc. Grocery bags are 5 cents each, most people use their own cloth ones.
Here's an example of the bottle deposits we pay, is this about the same for you:
    10 cents for every:
pop can, milk carton, wine bottles,1 litre plastic bottle, beer cans or beer bottles.
    25 cents for every:
2 litre pop bottle, 1 gallon milk container, tetra packs. hard liquor bottles.

As for the gates, they were delivered and are in the snow bank, i need to wait until spring to re-paint them. I'll stick with the black, all of the gold sections will also go black. Knackered, oh ya. I'd lay down for a snooze between trips to the store and wake up wondering if I had slept through till the next day.

Overland, sounds like it is all going to come together well. I don't normally like patterned bench tops but that one is not too patterned - it almost looks like cork and a mix of tiles in the shower sounds good. Will there be any other tiled walls?? Hope you can post some finished results for us

Can, we don't have deposits on things here in NSW, every so often the subject comes up, but I know South Australia does and I think one other State. We have wheelie bins for plastic and tins that gets collected fortnightly and another bin for paper and cardboard that is collected on the alt fortnight. Pretty much everywhere you go now - shops, parks, beaches, they have separate bins for recycling. For shopping, a lot of people buy the biodegradeable bags for around $2 each otherwise use plastic. Some shops charge 10c a bag, others don't. I'm a bit annoyed at the moment, all my bio bags have suddenly broken down so I have to go buy more which does get a bit expensive. The supermarkets have bins too to recycle the plastic bags. I also have some thermal bio bags for frozen and refrigerated items on hot days.

Remember way back when supermarkets used to use those big brown paper bags? I loved them and when my joeys were little I covered each of them a bag with Christmas paper to use as their Santa bags. In our recent cleanup we found them - joeys were very disappointed to be tossing them, they had stood up to over 40 years of wear.

Overland, I really like the minimal tile look. Originally BH wanted tiles to the ceiling but I was hesitant as our bathrooms are only small. Builder came down to quote and when we mentioned full tiling he said they looked like elevators. That finished me. We have taken one of the colours from the tiles for the paint so you don't even realise it.

Roo, so you don't have tile throughout the bathroom? Which walls did you paint? Sorry, I'm kinda confused :-/
  • 13 years ago
Overland, in the ensuite we only tiled the shower recess. We used a 12 x 12 tile on the floor and a 1/2 floor tile as a skirting around the rest of the walls. In the main bathroom we again tiled the shower recess, the matching wall tiles are 12 x 24 and we used them longways and put one row of tiles around the bath and continued them behind the vanity as a backsplash. The rest of the walls just have the skirting tile again. Everything else is painted.

It is very common thing 3 year olds say when they are starting to put sentences together. Another one of my childish moments - we ollds do things like that.

I'll probably confuse you more than the others here, in many cases it isn't just learning English it is learning Aussie English as well. Many of our words are spelt different to US too although the Canadians and Scots spell like me. I often think how hilarious it would be if ever we all met up with our different accents and expressions too.

Roo, lovl good to know....I guess I'll have to pay more attention to my two little princesses lingo then, and learn you'll different English as we go - an old man told me once - everyday we learn something new, then we die stupid!

Astraea right on! I'm now curious to know what gave me up?
Overland - how old are your princesses?

I know you should always learn something new every day but I haven't heard about dying stupid. Certainly on this post you never stop learning.

I think I can safely speak for Astraea too - your name sort of gives you away............ not to mention you told us the other day.

My princess are 2 and 6, and the 6 years old sometimes mixing Hebrew with English and that's makes us all laugh.

I guess what the old man meant was if you learn everyday something new then perhaps you have not learned enough, or, there was so much more to learn by the time you're gone - does that make sense??

I assumed Astraea didn't see that post and most people can't really figure it out so I was kinda surprised when she got it on the first guess.
Wow 2 and 6 - gorgeous ages. My little one in LA is 6 and is a constant ball of energy. Great she is learning a second language though, it will all come to her one day. Yes maybe it is the constant learning thing and how you are never done.

I think Astraea said one time she is Jewish. Maybe that might have helped??? I just went by your name, but we have so many nationalities here now I think we are always picking up on names.

Overland - I looked at your profile, which gives your name. My first thought was maybe you were Persian, but then I found "Shahar" on Wikipedia:

"Shahar is the god of dawn in the pantheon of Ugarit. He is the twin brother and counterpart of Shalim, the god of dusk. The name is a cognate of the Hebrew word Shahar (שחר) meaning dawn."

Roo - Yes, I'm Jewish, and I have a bunch of cousins in Israel. Sometimes names just have a certain sound to them.
Wow, Astraea - you are amazing. Overland - did you know that?

Actually I picked up on the surname, that to me sounded Israeli.

Wow Astraea, What a research :) I didn't even think it's possible to find it in Wikipedia... Given that the middle letter "h" is not exactly the Hebrew letter ״ח״ it's more of a "ch" and let me share with you something, when I used to meet up with people and they ask my name I say Shahar in the Hebrew pronunciation that would carry alone a 10 minutes of corrections on how to pronounce it right, so I said the heck with those corrections and for a while I use to go by the translation of my name (which was, by the way, given to me because I was born early in the morning) - Dawn, but spelled Don (although Shahar is a unisex Hebrew name Dawn is not in English). Then I found out that LA is the capital of immigrants from all over the world and my name is not that hard to pronounce - if pronounced in the way it's written in English - and so I did!
Overland - When I went to Hebrew school (a real misnomer), we learned to read phonetically, so we could read prayers in synagogue. They didn't focus on translations, so that we could learn to speak the language .. for which I was disappointed then & even more now. As time went by, I forgot everything, since without being able to understand what I was reading, or be able to speak, it was kind of pointless to bother. That the "H" is like "ch", it becomes a sound westerners don't like, which is why I write "Chanukah", but most holiday cards say "Hanukah"; they think it sounds like clearing your throat (or bringing up phlegm)!

When my cousin lets me know about new children in the family, I often have to ask whether they're boys or girls, because the Hebrew/Israeli names don't indicate the sex to westerners, like names in America do.
