Take the brass off..tape up glass and spray paint it satin black or bronze metallic.

Before you do anything, get the O.K. from your landlord or you might as well kiss your security deposit goodbye, even if you improve the space. If you are allowed, than definetly nix the brass as JWinteriors suggested, and maybe try staining the brick a mocha brown. Compliment your furniture colors with artwork over fireplace and sculptures on the mantle.

I would pain the room a soft gray....being careful the undertone is not too blue or pink. BM Harbour Town is nice. Agree with getting rid of the brass, they make FP screens covers that could mask some of that. I love, love your shutters.
