Wood paneling in bathroom?

The house we moved to has a bathroom that is floor to ceiling wood paneling, including the shower stall. Imagine a sauna and that's what it looks like. The bathroom is small and I think all the wood makes it very dark. We primered and painted the wood paneling in the living area, can we do the same for the bathroom? Will it hold up to moisture? I'm guessing it was done decades ago and it does look very clean. If we can just paint and primer, what about the shower stall? Will it really hold up to direct water? If not what should we do with it on a budget? Thanks!

I would love to see pics of this. In regards to paint sticking to the wood outside the shower, I suggest using BIN shellac primer for optimum adhesion. There's a couple of paints designed specifically for Bath and Kitchen, but you probably just need a paint with a bit of sheen. For the paneling specifically, I would suggest Ben Moore Advance. You will see less brush/roller strokes and cures really hard.

I definitely would not paint any of the paneling that water hits. If you are dead set on paint, I would ask a professional, maybe an epoxy paint might work.

Can you ask the previous owners how they maintained the shower in such nice condition? Some sellers love to tell you about their house,even after closing.

Definitely not set on anything in there. Just not sure what's best or how to do it. Should we rip out the wood in the shower stall? Cover it up with drywall and then tile it?

you can't just drywall a shower -- it has to be waterproofed, then cement board, and then tile. I'd worry about whether there was any of that under the wood -- maybe they just never took showers!
