Most designers will strongly suggest staying with the same species and finish.

Maple goes with maple. Everything else sticks out like a sore thumb. Oak's grain is TOO HEAVY, cherry turns the wrong colour. Hickory has too much movement, the list goes on and on.

Maple is a great hardwood. It is very handsome and very light. It is relatively easy to get in any cut or plank width. You have the chance to get it "all one species" so why fight it.

To be clear, the old maple will be a STRONG YELLOW by now. The new maple will be a very light blonde. Maple really should be sanded and refinished TOGETHER with the new maple so that you get a beautiful, even finish...no one would know you had two different floors installed at two different times.

Maple is hard to stain...but a stain expert will be able to get it done for you. If you want a new colour of wood, now is a good time to get it all stained and refinished so that you don't feel overwhelmed with "maple".

Or rip everything out and start again with a wood you like.
