Awful kitchen layout - need help!

We are just beginning the process of thinking about renovating the old, outdated, and awkward galley kitchen in our 1931 home. We have so many challenges with the current layout I don't even know where to start. First off, we have almost no useful upper cabinet storage. Our only wall cabinet is pictured below; the higher ones are hardly useful at all for anything we'd use on a daily basis. Lower cabinets are for pots and pans.

Here you see my only real useful counter space: about 2' sandwiched between the sink and the range.

Below is our only food storage space (in the long, righthand cabinet; the left is for glasses and dishes). Lower cabinets are for bakeware.

You can also see in the background that we have a small eat-in space. This is the original external wall, so it's masonry underneath and can't be expanded. Also, the central plumbing stack runs behind the wall on the righthand side of the photo below.

We're considering knocking down the wall between the kitchen and the dining room, but that could eliminate our only upper wall cabinet.

On the other end of the kitchen, we could knock down the wall between the hall and the kitchen, and eliminate the small utility closet to give us some added space. (see below)

One design/build firm suggested blocking up the windows over the sink and adding upper cabinets there, since knocking down the wall to the dining room would give us added light on that end (our dining room is full of windows, but small). I'm lost about where to start, and overwhelmed at the budgets people are giving us for such a small space. I'd welcome any feedback or suggestions!
