I can't help you but I would recommend reading The Tulip by Anna Pavord if you are interested in the history of this plant.

It does not look like anyone here can help you, and neither can I. I would suggest you try to contact one of the old Dutch bulb growers and ask them about this. You could try Van Tubergen via info@vantubergen.nl. I grew up in that area of Holland, and it is the first name that pops up for me. There are lots more of course.

Your description is taken from Anna Pavord's book, I think. I have never heard the term "tulipa dief", not does anything come up when I google it. It does not quite make sense to me for various reasons either, but whatever the term, if it is something that happens occasionally, an old tulip growing business should know about it. suggest you look on the Colourblends website where there is a long article (by Eric Breed )about species tulips. I have collected these for some years and there is often considerable confusion between the area where they are grown and the naming of such. Turkish tulips means nothing, taxonomically, tbh although Dutch growers have something of a history of reviving older style such as the Van Tol and old cottage tulips. Most of mine have been grown from seed and originate in Turkmenistan/Kazakhstan. Georgia and Azerbaijan.
