Well, the first thing I'd do is rid yourself of the TV. As you pointed out, it's hiding the window, and you're losing light as well. Where the outdoors should be, you're getting-- instead-- the ever-present glow from the TV screen. I'd eliminate the mirror, too. My sense is that if you eliminated the TV and the messy desk stuff to the right, you could then pick out a dramatic wall color for that fireplace wall (a warm taupe-gray, dark?) and then maybe a lighter color for those angled walls (angled at ceiling). After that, then see if you still hate the fireplace. Removing all the clutter, including TV, and painting walls will make a huge difference. Ultimately, I'd replace the carpet, too.

How about mounting the TV over the fireplace? That solves your window and mirror issue, and I imagine that getting rid of the TV is not an option for you. Can you relocate your husband's 'office' to another room?

if you really never use it then yes,take it out,it is not a pretty thing,sorry!!then you can put the tv there it would also allow you to use the whole room better..it would mean having to replace the flooring and that will give you lots of options to have a great room..is it possible to move to desk to the other side of the room so you are not seeing it while you are using the seatingarea?

TVs over the fireplace are a BAD IDEA. For one the viewing angle from the seats in front is very uncomfortable for your neck. Then there's the problem of heat rising from the fireplace. Electronic stuff should never be placed above heat sources, it shortens the life of the components by a considerable amount.

I'd go with your idea of removing the fireplace, putting the TV in it's place. And go with some cabinetry to hide the rest of the stuff or think seriously about setting up that desk in another room elsewhere in the house.

I'd move the tv over to the right side of the fireplace and find another place for your husband's desk. Such a shame that it's blocking a window now.

I wouldn't remove the fireplace. Even if you never use it, it still is an interesting element in your room and should you ever want to sell the house, perhaps people would love a fireplace then.

Removing the mirror and adding a stone cladding will look very nice.

I agree, you should remove your fireplace and put the tv in its place. You can then put built-ins around the tv and on either side (around the window on the left) like in the first image. As for the other side, and your husband's junk..well it depends how well you can organize it but I would love to see you do something like this..(second image).

I think getting rid of the fireplace is your best solution. I am not an expert but i don't think it will lower the value of your home - not in your neck of the woods. This would allow you to move your tv - either wall mounted or on a nice piece of furniture. you could still have a custom desk piece added for your husbands office space. Its been my experience with 40 years of marriage that your husband is probably not going to suddenly become a neat freak, so being able to "close" the area off is your best hope for a neat and attractive area. LOL, With the windows uncovered, you would have more options - maybe even a nice chair and small side table for reading?… It looks like you have a beautiful home.

Seeing as you already mentioned you never use the fireplace and also live in Florida then by all means remove it. That will open that space up to place the TV along the wall. Then add some shelves to hold your artwork and photos. As suggested if there is another room your husband could use as an office that would take care of his messy desk. If that is not possible I agree with you get a nice desk where all paper work and what not can be hidden away.

If there is no other space for the office, I would swap the office location with the TV. Put his taller cabinet on the wall with the door. An L-shaped work surface would be nice in this area if the window isn't too low. Maybe he just needs a better storage and desk area with more closed storage. I've attached a couple of idea photos.

As far as the fireplace, don't put the TV above it. It's way to high for good viewing. Build in shelves and TV to the right of the fireplace. Remove the mirror and the clutter on the fireplace and mantle. Add some lovely art in place of the mirror.

You need to add some beachy Florida colors to offset that white fireplace.
