Drapery Stack Back??

I'm using a drapery treatment with a rod and rings to cover a sliding door that get very bright sun in the morning BUT must stack back to clear the door most of the day to enjoy the gorgeous view.

All things being equal what treatment stacks tighter when drape is fully open? I'm considering an invert pleat or French pleat. Fabric widths remain the same.

I get completely different answers from drapery people.

It seems to me that stack back are is one third the width of the pleated curtains. If curtains are 120 inches wide when closed then stack back should be 40 inches either on one side of window for one way draw or 20 inches on either side of window for two way draw.

You'll probably hear from professionals, but my thought is that whatever pleat is used won't make very much of a width difference to have any effect. Have you thought about blinds or sliding panels?

Not sure if this is what you mean but perhaps you can put a rod that is wider than the door opening up and then when the curtains are open all the way they are actually all along the wall not the door and you get to see out fully.

Agree with Maureen. Hang the rod wide enough off the slider to accommodate all that fabric you will get with draperies.

In my opinion, grommet top drapes stack back with the least amount of volume. If you are going to open and close them frequently, a pole to pull them back and forth is helpful. ( As on the drapes at a hotel)

We agree with the previous commenters. Grommet drapes will stack the smallest, but the best solution is to allow enough space for stack back beyond the door. If you need a custom curtain rod for this, we can help you with that!

I agree a grommet system is a much better choice for this application and they require just anice rod and not hooks or special rod

stack back is controlled by how far apart the hooks/rings/grommets are. the further apart they hang, the deeper (front to back) each pleat is, the smaller the stack back. closer pleats equal more stack back.

(the reason it takes so much space to shirr a panel on a rod is each 'pleat' is about a half in deep.)

you do need to make sure the rod is far enough off the door to let the pleats fall free; especially important if you have a panel over a shade or sheer.

Beg to differ with above poster about stack back....stack back is purely the thickness of the pleat and ring when stacked tightly. An inverted pleat and a french pleat will stack back about the same...figure about an inch per pleat for a tight stack..unless the rings and fabric are really thick it may be slightly more. Grommets will stack tighter but they are NOT a good option for a drape that will be open and closed regularly...they simply do not traverse as well as rings. You may just need a slightly longer rod as the above posters have mentioned, but then your drapes will need to also be a little wider to accommodate this.

Lorane, I'm curious what you ended up with. I'm getting ready to make drapery panels for our French doors, which open to the inside, so I need the panels to completely clear the doors. I'm thinking I need an extra 8" - 10" of rod outside the door frame. What worked for you?
