help with lotus

I think I may have a problem. Last year I planted a tub with lotus .They were happy and gave me 4-5 blooms. They are coming up now but I think I have too much soil in the pot. The water is only 2-3 inches from growing medium to the rim of the pot. When I planted them I left more room than that but I assume the roots filled in the rest.Is there any way to remove some of the growing medium safely and not harm my lotus or will they be ok.There really is no room for the floating leaves to float. The first leaves are now standing...????

maybe someone else will answer,but i would leave the lotus alone.it is not a good idea to do anything to the lotus when it is growing.you should be alright with that much water over the top

My Lotus have spent quite a bit of time with not much more than that depth of water. It doesn't worry them while there's some water over the soil. It's normal for most Lotus leaves to be standing well above the water anyway.
