Apple or pear blossoms are my guess. My peach is in bloom this week, but I'm a couple days to a week or so behind Knoxville's bloom times.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of what you are seeing out there is the highly invasive callery pear, Pyrus calleryana. This scourge is the result of people planting cultivars like 'Bradford', 'Aristocrat', and 'Chanticleer'. These trees are wrecking havoc on the environment and can become a maintenance nightmare for farmers who's tractor tires are punctured by the thorns when they try to mow. The fruit smells awful, the plants inevitably fall apart at a relatively young age, and the list goes on. This plant is just a nightmare!

Without a major public campaign to rid our area of the invasive pest, they seem to be here to stay. Still, I would strongly recommend not planting them and even removing ones already planted, if possible.

I rank them right up there with privet and Japanese honeysuckle. They're beautiful when they bloom, but only until you realize every bloom will make another seed for the birds to spread. Grrrrrrrr.

In Loudon Co there are literally ACRES of the things where they've taken over fallow fields and hedge rows. Right now, if you take exit 72 off I-75 South and head toward Loudon, on your right there will be a 5 acre hillside that looks like a snow storm. They are choking out native vegetation at an alarming rate. And the last time I looked at the invasive list for TN, it was merely being "watched"!?!?

Brandon7, I'm glad you wrote that. We moved here last year from FL and so we have tried becoming familiar with what not to plant from the invasive list here in TN. I live outside of Nashville in a rural area, and one of the streets to a major neighborhood has about 20 of these Bradford Pears lined down their road. They are beautiful but good to know why not to plant them.
