I think it could be a stunning mood piece and definitely doesn't have to blend. A soft light in the bedroom ...you don't have to have high wattage. If you don't want it, sell it to me!

Yep the current shade is definitely a no. Just wondering if there's a way to possibly paint the bottom, remove the fabric and tassels and adds new shade onto the existing 'bones' that are there. But yeah, it's the colour scheme I'm wondering about. I could easily do white with a patterned shade in those colours but would it look unusual? Is this lamp just meant to be old and burgundy? Hard to say...

I'm just thinking that if I can't redo it she may want it back. Trying to come up with a game plan ;)

If the lamp is sturdy and the shaft is cloisonné, you really shouldn't paint it. But if it's a cheap lamp, then why not.

But first, I'd talk to the MIL. Thank her for the use of the lamp and tell her about how excited you are about your new house and the colour scheme you're thinking about for your bedroom. Don't talk about how the old lamp doesn't fit. Just thank and return.

Take it with you to a lamp store and find a nondescript shade that will fit. Then put it in the guest room. Do not throw away that old shade. She may ask you for it one day.

It looks like cloisonne and bronze. It might work with a different shade on it.

The shade used on the solvang link that kjbjw is an excellent option. And if your lamp is of the same vintage, then your MIL gave you a princely gift.

Consider whether it might fit in your living room.

Could the lamp go in master bathroom? Maybe with a light shade will brighten it up.

I'm going to look into where this lamp is from, get some details on it. If it's brass I may just try to have the bottom cleaned and go with a new shade. I don't mind the darker base if the top wasn't so dark. I could probably still then put it in our bedroom or the living room. It is probably quite old so I will take every bodies advice and leave the base unpainted for sure. Thank you all for your input. I appreciate all of it!

You have a picture on desk/dresser next to lamp (I see) looks similar to lamp. Put them together in corner next to bed.

OMG is my first thought. If it was me, I would have to talk to my MIL in a nice way and try and return the lamp without hurting her feelings.

It actually has som of your yellow/gold and turquoise in it . A shade in one of those colors or white might actually work.

Definitely not returning it, I've been looking into it and it's an antique for sure, quite valuable. I'm going to have the bottom cleaned and replace the top.

After looking closer at the photos you are definitely right, it has those shades in it just with the darker colour too. I feel like with a shade like one suggested above it would be much more of my style...and the shade needs to be replaced anyway, it hasn't been kept well.

You can clean it yourself, just don't try to polish any of the metal.

Expect to buy a few shades until you find the one with the right dimensions. Make sure the wiring is safe.

I would embrace the stand and get a new shade. It is very interesting .

I would suggest getting this appraised. It may actually be worth something - and if not monetarily, it could be worth something to someone else who might like it!
