An option is to place your blinds (I would use a roller variety, maybe one like 'silhouette' that will open and close like wood blinds but be soft, let your nice light come in, and totally disappear when you want them to do so) at or above trim level. A box that matches your trim can be easily made that will hide the roller part. I would put the roll chain type mechanism for opening/closing lowering/raising on the left side by the wall.

The box will be high enough and blend well enough that you shouldn't notice it too much when you walk in the door. To try out the idea, tape a cardboard box up there and take a look.

@Cahk, just because your local blinds installer doesn't have the right product, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Our blinds are only 3/4" in depth, and we ship nationwide.
