Would you replace a perfectly functioning old appliance?

We have a 2nd "entertaining" kitchen in the basement of our home that has a 17 year old Whirlpool Gold stainless dishwasher that works perfectly and I am thinking about replacing. It is only used a handful of times a year when I use that kitchen to entertain, holidays and the like.

The reason this came up is we are in the midst of two kitchen remodels at two beach properties we own and ended up ordering an extra Bosch dishwasher. (long story) The extra dishwasher can be returned, however since it is on back order we need to take delivery of it before we can return it. That's when I came up with the idea of replacing the 17 year old dishwasher we have in our basement "entertaining" kitchen. The Bosch was about $900 and it isn't just the money but the frugal inside of me finds it incredibly wasteful to just throw out a perfectly functioning stainless steel dishwasher just because it's old. Tell me I should just do it, 17 years and that I have more than gotten my money's worth!

You could sell it / donate it to someone who needs one and would be happy with your old unit... Despite the old saying though, "beggers can't be choosers", it's not always the case, so it might be harder than you think to give it away!

Otherwise, I would keep it and put this money aside for when it does need to be replaced :)

I'd return the new one. :)

Return the Bosch and thank your lucky stars the old one has been working for 17 years. The new one probably won't last that long.

keep the old one, return the new one

Keep the old one. Do you really use the old one enough to justify dumping several hundred dollars into a new one? Besides, it's a dishwasher. It sounds like it's not your only DW and a person can live without a DW far longer than they could go without a refrigerator or water heater.

Thanks all! You confirmed what I was thinking. It's hard when you are in the midst of a remodel for that not to spill over into other things, even if those things don't need fixing. Yes absolutely amazing that the original Whirlpool Gold appliances that we bought when we built the house 17 years ago are still functioning and serving a useful life in a 2nd kitchen. So impressed with Whirlpool, that for the most part I choose those appliances in the beach remodel we are now working on. Which definitely does not warrant anything too high end. (One property will be a rental).

I would definitely keep the old one. I have an 18 year old Maytag dryer that is functioning just fine. I have the feeling that if I bought a new one, it wouldn't last nearly as long. I have a Maytag washer that is under 3 years old and I keep on hoping it won't break down, as my last Maytag washer only lasted 7 years, so I feel the newer appliances tend not to have a long life.

yes keep the old one as you don't use it enough to justify energy or water savings with a new one (if it was in your primary kitchen and used daily, different story). Down the road when it does need to be replaced, you could probably get a less expensive replacement
