The grasshopper baits, like Nolo Bait and Semaspore, are effective but are of limited use here in OK because the protozoa (Nosema locuste) they contain is most effective in cooler conditions, so it works best if used in March, April and May. It also is most effective on the smaller instars, roughly when the hoppers are 1/4" to 3/4" long, and not nearly as effective (and seems to work more slowly) on larger grasshoppers. Since grasshoppers rarely reach a population level high enough to be a problem until the weather gets hot, by the time we really need to use it, our weather is too hot for it to work to its maximum effectiveness.

In the years when I have used it, I mostly have gone to a nursery and bought it so I can check the expiration date and make sure I'm not buying one that is about to expire. If you order it online, you may get a container sent to you that is just a week or two or three from expiring, and I don't like that. It only takes a little bit of it, so a 1-lb container can last me for 3 or 4 months even in the worst hopper years, but not if it is about to expire when it arrives.

I have used Semaspore in spring, normally in April of May if there are dozens and dozens or hundreds and hundreds of tiny grasshoppers in my garden and it knocks their population back significantly almost right away. Then, over the next few weeks, the population drops even more. It doesn't get them all. It isn't a quick kill. It is more effective in cool springs than in hot ones. If I am seeing large numbers of grasshoppers in the rangeland/prairie land that surrounds my garden but not in garden itself, which happens sometimes, I treat a 6-8' wide band of open land around the perimeter of the garden fence, and I treat a 6-8' band of open land along our south property line, since rangeland grasshoppers tend to migrate onto our property from the pastureland to our south.

Grasshoppers change their behavior as the rangeland dries out in summer and turns brown, and begin to migrate in large groups. One day your garden can be more or less grasshopper-free, and the next day it may have hundreds of grasshoppers in it. I don't bother buying more Semaspore at a time like that because those large, migratory ones are hard to kill. The best way to kill them is with a wheat bran bait laced with Sevin that is called Ecobran.

When I first saw Ecobran, it was on the website of an organic gardening supply company and I was shocked to see a chemical product on their webpage and in their catalog. However, they carried it because their customers (even their normally organic or mostly organic customers) needed it because there is really nothing short of a strong synthetic pesticide that kills them in the summer. After thinking about it for a couple of years (I don't go non-organic lightly), in a year with a very bad grasshopper infestation, I bought the EcoBran and used it. It did a great job of killing grasshoppers, but I did have to use it repeatedly because as soon as it killed off one horde of migratory grasshoppers, another one flew in. It is considered a low-toxicity product because (unlike pesticides you spray) an insect has to ingest it in order for it to affect them, and I believe the percentage of Sevin in it is 2%, which also is low.

Another option might be to spray your plants (not all of them, and I'll explain that in a minute) with Surround WP, a finely micronized kaolin clay product developed to serve as a barrier that deters pests from feeding on plants. You have to be careful with it because it sticks to everything it touches and it can be difficult to wash off any sort of plant part that is fuzzy. For example, it can be washed or scrubbed off plums quite easily, but it is impossible to get all of it off of peaches.

Surround remains me of an old-timey method used to protect tomato plants from grasshoppers---sprinkling them with all-purpose flour, although since it is a wettable powder, it goes on the plants better than flour does and doesn't seem as harmful to the plant foliage. (Sprinkling plants with flour is not a method I like to use as I think the flour gums up the leaves and makes them ugly and possibly unhealthy, but I tried it once and it may or may not have affected the grasshopper population some, though not a lot.)

I try to avoid thinking of anything as a war or a battle when I go to my garden. I want my garden to be a place of peace, serenity and happiness, and I think my mental attitude determines whether or not that is true. However, I admit the sight of squash bugs does put the words "battle, war & kill" at the forefront of my mind. Grasshoppers? Not so much. By the time they are bad enough to make me crazy, we're usually in drought and having wildfires and I'm not home in the garden much to see them, though I can see their damage easily as we drive by it on our way to a fire. There are many things in one's garden or greenhouse, yard or landscape, that can drive the gardener crazy. I just try not to let anything get to me too much.
