Possible tiling delay need to vent a bit

Feeling more than a little irritated today. So I'll vent here for a bit. Our house is being built by a home building company which is a small, family owned company. Cast of characters here: "Dad" owns the company, older gentleman, semi-retired but still watches over everything and does do some work (flooring and tiling mostly). "Son" is the main project manager and our main point of contact with everything going on. So, a couple weeks ago Son is talking to my husband about the drywalling and future steps. He mentions wanting to do the master shower and tub tile "in a couple weeks". Which I took to mean about this time or hereabouts. Approximately. Dad is going out of town for most of the month of April starting on the 8th since he and his wife are going on a cruise around Asia. Good for him, vacations are good, especially since he's at the age where he probably doesn't want to do as much anymore. I don't fault any of this. However, we had a very specific accent tile we wanted used (a Susan Jablon mosaic tile) that we were going to source ourselves. I had wanted them to let me know when they were about 3 weeks out on tiling since normal orders take about 2 weeks to ship and then about a week to get to me in Alaska via UPS Ground. So the announcement of a "couple weeks" makes me hurry up the order for the tile. They were nice and accomodating and for an extra fee of $10 per sheet (I ordered 22 sheets) they expedited it for me. Tile came in on Monday evening. We dropped it off at the house yesterday so it would be ready to go for tiling. This morning my husband was talking on the phone to Dad (who will be doing the tiling work) and based on what he was saying it sounds like he won't be doing the tiling work until he comes back from vacation at the end of April!!! I'm more than a little upset about this. I know how many houses they are working on at the moment, and I know that our house is the only one at the stage of construction where this can be done. 2 others are behind us (still being drywalled or not yet drywalled) and 1 is ahead of us (tile already was done). There's still a couple weeks to go before this guy leaves and from where I sit there is no good reason why this can't be done before he goes!! Grrrr... If it does get delayed then we basically wasted over $200 that I could have used for something else! I know $200 sounds small, but we really don't have that much money to throw around, and I really don't have to pay for unneccessary things. Either Son should have been more realistic when talking to us, or Dad needs to make sure things get done before he leaves since we went to the trouble of expediting the tile order. Keep in mind also, that throughout this whole process, we have been told that we are the "good clients" that they really like working with because we actually respond to them promptly and get them the information they want in a quick fashion so that we aren't contributing to any delays. On the whole the process has been pretty smooth, and this is the first thing I'd consider a hiccup. But a difference of at least a month in tiling time frames is pretty significant!

And also, the main shower and tub tile is just neutral 12x12 tiles that they're picking up from Lowe's so it's not like there's a wait for any other materials here also.

Then why get your panties in a bunch over a minor detail as this. If he told you tiling was going to start on the date (!) and then you found this out you may have a reason to complain, a "couple of weeks" can and does have different definitions to different people. And I get the $200 but at the end of the day it is only $200 and in reality you probably should have had the tile in storage well before they even got close to the time of tiling.

"...you probably should have had the tile in storage well before they even got close to the time of tiling."

    This is exactly my thought.

If you are at this stage in the game and this is the biggest irritation you've had, I am seriously jealous of your home building experience. :) I'm not trying to be glib, nor am I trying to minimize your irritation. If you've gotten this far and $200 is the biggest unexpected "overage", you may seriously win some sort of prize for the smoothest home build ever.

I completely understand your frustration. We're in the midst of our build, and any amount of money "wasted" at this point is a big deal to us as well. Can you voice your concerns to the son? There might not be much you can do now, but I guess moving forward I would get exact details when possible. I would have had the same expectations as you in regards to when tile would be started, but everyone has different definitions of terms. And some people use vague terms, such as in a few weeks, but that could really mean anything so I like to try to get as specific a date as possible. Sorry about this and also that some people on here are less than helpful. Good luck moving forward!
