Looking at the map of where they show up, there are no mark's in this area. I live across the river from Scottsboro Al. I suppose climate warming is causing them to migrate around. This is the first time I have ever seen them I lived in Florida then South Alabama and now in north Alabama.

I hear it commonly referred to as a "bumblebee moth" (Hemaris diffinis), but always bet your money on rhizo ;-D Happy spring to you both!

Larry, Hemaris thysbe and its close relatives have a very widespread range all over N. America; they're not a warm climate moth.

I'm in Huntsville and see them frequently, but only by accident. They, and other Sphinx moths are more active in the early evening or at night. That's the moth habit.

We keep containers of flowering plants on our back patio and often see different kinds of sphinx moths hovering around. They will even visit a pot of lantana sitting right on the table in front of us, close enough to pet!

i have never seen one before, and it was around 1 pm when I took the pictures, I was looking for honey bees to see if anything was pollinating my trees.

And you found that something unexpected was doing some pollinating! Sphinx moths, since they are active hoverers, require lots of nectar, displacing and transferring pollen as they feed.
