Backsplash?

What is installed behind the counter and below the mirror? Is is part of the counter top or a separate backsplash or a part of the tiled or painted wall? I bought the IKEA Godmorgan cabinet and sink but want to install it on a wall that is not tiled. I don't want to use a backsplash so I'm thinkning of just dropping the mirror to the top of the vanity. Is that feasible?
